Only 6 ounces after cleaning them up, but I needed them for my spaghetti sauce. There are lots more that will be allowed to mature.
5/27 - 12 oz. baby lettuce. This was cut from the "lettuce nursery", as it was getting too large to transplant. After I cut this, I planted the roots. Hopefully they will continue growing.
5/29 - 15 oz. lettuce. These heads, from an area unprotected by bird netting, had the outer leaves severely chomped. Cookie, the rabbit, got most of it, but we got the best part, the tender inner leaves.
Total harvest for the week: 6 pounds 14 ounces
Total harvest for the year to date: 24 pounds 14 ounces
Total harvest for the week: 6 pounds 14 ounces

This is right on target with last year's year to date total of 24 pounds 4 ounces. Also, a year ago this week, I picked my first ripe raspberry. This year they are way behind.
Please join in the Monday Harvest at Daphne's Dandelions!
Very yummy! And I'm so jealous of the broccoli. I want some so badly, but the store bought stuff is no comparison!
ReplyDeleteI harvested about 2 ounces of lettuce yesterday and some mint leaves for a BBQ we went to, and a few salads last week, but nothing of weight or substance. I just am not in a position with my garden to harvest something every week.
Looks good, do you eat all the lettuce you harvest? I found I had to give a lot of mine away. Your broccoli looks good. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful harvests! I love that you have so many varieties of greens! Onions are a treat! Did you pull up your garlic before they matured?
ReplyDeleteSinfonian, I thought the broccoli heads would be larger than they are so far. I think I'm going to plant a different variety next year.

Kris, up until today we kept the lettuce eaten. Of course, we have the pet rabbit, and he eats a LOT of it! Today I picked just the outer leaves of six Iceberg plants, and I ended up with over three pounds of lettuce leaves! I don't think we'll be able to eat all of that, I'll be giving some away.

Random, I just pulled two of the green garlic, because I really needed it and didn't want to use garlic powder in my sauce. It's spring planted garlic, so it won't mature for a long time yet. Even though it hasn't reached maturity, it's good and mildly garlicy in flavor. No doubt I'll be pulling more to use as I need it.
I just harvested all my lettuce heads, and to be honest I liked the outer greener leaves much more than the lettuce harvested from the heads.
ReplyDeleteI had 10 heads and once a week I would harvest all the outer leaves and would end up with lettuce coming out of my ears. I guess I will have to wait 5 to 6 months to have that problem now that the heat is here.
Broccoli---oh, you wicked woman. You taunt me.....do you realize that? I'm always 2-3 weeks behind you. And now this. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteKris, I have a dozen heads of that Iceberg, but the birds keep the outer leaves of the other six chomped up pretty badly. I haven't even harvested any of that bunch.
ReplyDelete********
Awwww, Sue, don't feel too badly. There's always somebody else that's 2-3 weeks ahead of me! Like that darned EG and Ribbit.
Nice harvest, Granny! I'm loving the lettuce in my garden. Currently, it's cold here, but soon it will be 100 degrees and I will be missing the lettuce. My bunnies got treats here, too! And the chickens got a few snails along with a couple handfuls of lettuce leaves.

See Lori, another reason I need chickens. For slugs! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping I can keep my lettuce cool enough to continue production through the summer, but we get temps above 100, too. I did keep it growing in 2009, but not in 2010. I wasn't too good about succession planting last year.
Everything is really popping up for you...I have work to do getting my little lettuce planted into the bed, but it's above 90's today and this week so I have to do it in the evening ..Today I was just too tired after Laundry and company yesterday..hopefull tomorrow or I'll stop by your house and get some..:o) they look real good.
ReplyDeleteVery nice granny, as always! I haven't picked my lettuce yet, but it is about ready! Plus it is getting hot hot hot here!
ReplyDeleteGinny, I wish you would come get some of this lettuce! I gave the youngest son a gallon bag stuffed full today, but I still have way more than we can use in the fridge....and there will be more to pick tomorrow.

Shawn Ann, it's been so cool here (unusually so) that I think I'm going to have lettuce for quite a while yet. I hope so, anyway.
Mmmmm, big salad time. Everything looks lovely. Have you had a slightly slowed-down spring, too?
ReplyDeleteExtremely slowed down, Stefaneener. It has been 10-15, even 20 degrees lower than our normal temperatures. We should be up in the 80s by now, and we're finally just barely making it out of the 60s this week.
ReplyDeleteDespite the cooler than normal temps - you are still harvesting a significant amount and a lot of variety each week. I am about two weeks behind you with broccoli - ours are just forming tiny heads in the center and have a long ways to go before being harvestable.
ReplyDeleteI might pick my first head of broccoli this evening or tomorrow. I can't wait for it. They keep getting bigger. I've never had a head of broccoli this big before. The largest I've ever picked was 3". I really like this new soil. It is so much easier than heavy clay. And I'm shocked my broccoli is in sync with yours. You should be so ahead of me by now. You have had such bad weather.
ReplyDeleteDaphne, I really wish I'd purchased a different variety of broccoli seeds. This tasted awfully good, but each plant takes up so much space for such a small harvest. I'd much prefer at least a 6" head, and mine are about 3-4". At least two of the plants are behaving like sprouting broccoli, rather than getting heads.
