August 27, 2011 - Sunflowers

I wondered how tall my sunflowers were going to get before they blossomed. Judging by the fence, which is 6' high, I'd say the tallest is about 13'.

  2. LOL, Johanna and Ginny. I'll have to chop them down to reach the flowers, I guess. I wanted to get a picture from on the ground looking up, but I couldn't get down that low....or if I did, I'd never get back up! I really didn't know they were going to get that tall, next year I'll plant shorter ones. The one that blew over landed on the zucchini and broke off half the plant, so I won't be getting many zukes now.

  5. I finally had to kill my zuchinni plant--the neighbors were starting to not answer the door. And no kidding, not one hour later, my crotchety neighbor Dolores asked if I had any zuchinni to spare.

I grew Burpee's Aztec gold sunflowers which were a nice manageble size for seed. Short season too.

  6. I thought my 10' tall ones were bad. I had to use a stool and be on my tip toes and still bend the plant down to get the flower head. I picked all the ripe ones this morning. I really don't think they will survive the wind storm. Some were coming down as it was. I guess we will see though.

  8. Mrs. P, Charmcity, Sue, Daphne & Robin, These were called Mammoth. They certainly are! The ones I planted a couple of years ago were too small, these are too large, but kinda cool. I have a pkt. of "mixed" I'll probably try next year. The stalks on these are huge, more like small trees than flowers! I really wanted to lie down on the ground and take a picture from that angle, but I was afraid I wouldn't get back up ;-)

  9. OMG! I didn't know sunflowers could grow so tall. I have two that are about 8 feet tall. They haven't bloomed yet. Doubt they will make it through Irene, though.

  10. Rachel, I had two topple last week, as I just had them tethered to the fence with garden twine. I only lost one though, and now they are tied to the fence with heavy cotton clothesline rope. Now, if we don't get a windstorm....I can't tie the top 6-8' to anything!

  11. they are monsters, lucky you haven't got cockatoos, they would be like a beacon screaming eat me.

  12. Vanessa, they seem even larger in person!

Kirsty, I have squirrels that run across the top of that fence every day. I fully expect to see them climbing the sunflower stalks when the seeds are ripe. Or maybe the big crow, who "talks" to me while I'm gardening, will have a feast. Whatever wildlife wants them, they are most welcome to them.

  13. I'd love to watch that squirrel that climbed those stalks. A comical feat. The bees and birds are certainly enjoying those tall babies. I don't think mine have ever gotten quite that tall. Amazing!

  14. Holy Sunflowers Batman! Those are huge! I honestly don't think I have ever seen any quite that tall before.

It's probably good you did not try to take the picture from the ground - your neighbors might have gotten worried and called 911!

  16. Cockatoos like to snip off their heads before they have even flowered, not so endearing as a squirrel! Once they have gone to seed I'm happy to share but so sad to watch one grow and miss the flower!
