August 5, 2011 - Really, Mrs. Pickles?

Mrs. Pickles mentioned she might become Mrs. Lettuce. My dear Mrs. Pickles, I cannot let that happen. Last year I was Mrs. Tomato, but I've had to give that up in 2011, so the title of Mrs. Lettuce must be mine. Really, it must. Today I picked 24 ounces of lettuce from my garden, which brings my total so far in 2011 to....

!!!TA-DA!!!

Exactly fifty pounds. Yes, fifty (50) pounds of luscious lettuce. And there's much, much more where that came from! My rabbit loves me. Well, I love me too, as the container on the right is for our consumption. We get the crispy young center leaves, Cookie gets the bigger, outer leaves, and the compost pile gets a tiny handful that wasn't quite fit for consumption. Compost lettuce is not added to the weight total.

The garden looked so lovely last night, in the pink glow of the sunset. I wish the photo showed it better. You'll just have to trust me.

  4. Kelli, I didn't think I'd ever beat last year's record of 45 pounds, but I did! :-)

  5. Well, if you are Mrs. Lettuce and Thomas is fighting with EG for the title of Mr. Tomato Head....what is Mrs. Pickles????...and what am I...or can't you post that on here??

  6. Oh them are fightin words...ha ha

It almost makes me want to go out and cut all my lettuce down, but then it would all go bad. I am only at 7lbs to date.So LOTS of catching up to do. However, I do have lots of lettuce so you just never know...lol
But 50lbs of lettuce wow!! you just might start growing a fuzzy little tail and some floppy ears..lol

  7. Robin, I'd say Mrs. Pickles has enough pickles to retain the title. Besides, she wouldn't want to change that pretty plaque to say "Mrs. Lettuce's Garden", it wouldn't fit!

Oh, I do hope she's not having problems with her blog. I can't access it now.

I guess you could be Mrs. Tomato this year. I'll pass that on to you.

  8. Mrs. Pickles, did you break Blogger yesterday? I can't access anyone's pages!

Don't cut your lettuce down. I won't taunt you too much about growing more than you did, I promise.

  9. Nevermind, Mrs. Pickles, Blogger is working again, so I guess it wasn't all your fault ;-D

  13. I think Dan gets the title Mr. Pickles this year. I'm not sure if Mrs. Pickles will like that though. Have they even met?

  15. How do you get so much great lettuce in all this heat. Mine is so bitter.

  16. Daphne, you and I were on the same wave length about Dan! I was just over on your blog and have named you Mrs. Beans.

Vanessa, most of it was planted behind the shed, which is to the south of the bed, with a 6' fence on the west and north sides. It's in shade much of the day, with morning sun. The Summercrisp isn't bolting, but it's getting lanky. The Red Sails is performing beautifully, so I can continue to pick outer leaves. I'm beginning to pull out the Summercrisp to harvest, so I can reseed that spot soon.

  17. yes I did read Dan aka the newly crowned Mr.Pickles(even if he doesn't know it) blog. Us Canadians can sure grow cucumbers!! Maybe we should get rid of the maple leaf on the flag and put a huge pickle on there!!

However, he is still in a zone 6 and I am in zone 2 So its kind of like comparing cucumbers and sauerkraut...lol Damn Ontario...lol

  18. Mrs. Pickle, I think maybe it's our US flag that needs to be changed. We're the ones that are in a pickle :-(

  20. Thank you, Sue. I wear my crown with pride.

  21. You are the Queen of Lettuce in my books! I am a slacker with only 36 pounds so far.

  22. But, Villager, I'm sure you have me beat in tomatoes and squash! I'm not having a very good tomato/squash year, I'm afraid.

  23. Beautiful!

50 lbs of lettuce!? You're such an over achiever. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ribbit, LOL! I kind of over achieve on the wrong things! I can't can/freeze/preserve lettuce.

  25. Amazing - your lettuce harvest is 5/8's my TOTAL, and I'm pleased with that. This grasshopper has much to learn. <<>>

  26. I am down to a small patch of lettuce at the moment and it is just about the right amount for us. We don't have a rabbit and the hens really don't like lettuce too much. I was swimming in it earlier this year and am glad to get back down to a more manageable sized patch.

  27. Kitsap, we ran a bit low toward the middle of July, so I'm happy we again have even more than we can use. It sure saves $$ when it comes to feeding our spoiled little rabbit!

  28. I'm going to quietly sit here in Kale Kingdom and enjoy my green of choice.

I know what you mean about that light -- the gloaming is my very favorite time of day.

    ReplyDelete
  29. OK, Stefaneener, we'll let you have the title of Mrs. Kale!

The gloaming......I didn't know that was what it was called. That's pretty. Much prettier than crepuscule ;-)
