January 31, 2012 - Hello, Sunshine!

In just a week, we went from this.....

....to this. When we left for Arizona in mid-October, all the flowers were still in bloom. I couldn't bear ripping them out, so now I have the job of pulling out all the dead ugliness of winter. Temperatures in the mid 50s and sunshine were all the motivation I needed to begin the cleanup.

That's better! The dead zinnias are gone, the leaves raked and put into the raised bed by the shed (they'll get removed, chopped and returned to the garden when I find the lawnmower), and the last section of fencing mended where the weight of flowers and snow pulled it down. There's still a lot to do, but at least I got something started.

  1. Now you are making me feel bad. I still haven't cleaned up the dead asparagus branches. Not only that but they line the driveway and look so ugly now. I really ought to get out and do it. Tomorrow is supposed to get up past 50 so I'll have some nice weather for it.

  2. wow what a change a week can make. It would take a few weeks of nice weather to melt our snow and turn the grass green again!

  3. It's always feel good when the clean up is finished. It makes it easier to drean and plan about the upcoming planting season. I's only six weeks till pea pamting time!

  4. You're getting some Georgia weather :-) We made it into the 60's yesterday and today. One of the shrubs in the yard is beginning to unfurl its leaves; I'm not sure that's a good thing, but I'm loving the weather.f

  5. Dianefaith, I grabbed a few lettuce and onion seeds and stuck them in the pots in front of the shed. If it stays fairly warm, they might actually grow. If not, I have a bunch planted inside under lights.

  8. Daphne, all the work I did on the front yard a couple of weeks ago....well, we had another windstorm. Now it looks like it was never cleaned up at all. Just covered with pine cones, branches and pine needles again. I have so much cleanup to do, and no little Ranger pickup for hauling it off to the dump. I have to just fill a couple of leaf bags and an extra can each week and let disposal pick it up.

Mrs. Pickles, our back lawn never did turn brown this winter. The front yard is brown, but the back has stayed quite lush, even with the snow and freezing temperatures. We got a Chinook wind the other night, and that zapped all the snow.

Oh, Ed, I'm just a small fraction of the way to finished! I still have all those giant cosmos, morning glory vines, lilies that haven't been cut back. I'll just try to get as much time out there as I can between now and March!

Ginny, I'll not be hitchin' up the horse for another 6-8 weeks ;-) Sit down and relax.

  9. Lucky you to have nice weather and be able to enjoy it. We had 4 more inches of snow fall today. I am not complaining though, this has been a mild winter for us here in Maine.

  10. Rachel, I hope this weather holds for a few days. I'm on call for jury duty starting next week, so not sure if I'll be home to get much of anything done.

  11. Looks good Granny! What a crazy winter! We have been having warm weather too. It was in the 50's yesterday and is supposed to be warm again today. Our little bit of grass is still green too. if this keeps up we will have to mow the grass!

  12. We've started a freezing period here, so I shan't be doing much outside for a bit (aside from the foundations for the greenhouse). Maybe I'll get the bathroom finished!

  13. Oh to see green grass again. I was just out with the dog and it is nothing but solid ice outside where any snow was shoveled with the rain we got over night. It will be another 2 1/2 months before I can start any clean up but I guess it all in what you are used to.
