March 14, 2012 - Do You See What I See?

The first tomato of 2012!

********

Garden preparation is on hold until Sunday. Son John has volunteered to remove the canopy from his pickup and haul a load of composted manure for me! I was afraid I was going to have to buy it by the bag this year, so I'm happy John is so accommodating.

  1. Shocking! Amazing progress. I'm starting early with my tomatoes this year, and they're still only seedlings! Still, it's comforting and motivational to see you blazing a trail for us. Congratulations! :)

    1. Scyrene, don't feel badly. These aren't my main crop of tomatoes, just a windowsill experiment....and it's working! I hope it lives on to ripen :-)

    1. Yes, Jenny....YAY! I think this little experiment might just work. It's even doing its thing on the windowsill, as it outgrew the overhead lights.

    1. Farmers Wife, if it ripens, it will be a tiny gold cherry tomato....but that's good enough for me!

    1. Rachel, John is such a good son. Sometimes I feel like I take advantage of him, but he's so darned smart and capable of doing everything!

    2. I am sure you will pay him back in fresh veggies from the garden. win-win :)

    3. You bet I will, Rachel. Actually, that's the reason for expanding the garden this year. I'm hoping to supply four families with fresh produce, and have a little left over for us. I might be stingy with those potatoes though ;-)

    1. Marcia, I started those (4) tomatoes on my birthday...January 26th! Three are blossoming now, but just one has a real tomato so far.

    1. If it actually ripens, it will be exciting....exciting to see who gets to eat the first tomato of the year! I usually just go ahead and eat it, and don't tell Mr. Granny. After all, I do all the gardening!

  10. No way, I just saw my first sprout today. You're too much! You could have a harvest total of less than 100 lbs. and still be best in our book!

    1. Yes, Amy. In fact, this tomato plant was the reason I had to buy the MG! Nothing else was available in January :-)

  12. Congratulations, I knew you could do it. Lucky you to be getting a truck load of manure, I wish someone would volunteer to get one for me.

    1. Ed, at $15 for a half yard of it, it's a lot cheaper than buying it by the bag at the big box store. Nicer stuff, too.

  13. I haven't even built my greenhouse yet! The only thing that's germinated thus far are the broad beans. Damn this English coldness!

    1. IG, with your new plot under construction, and the bathroom remodel, I don't know how you find time for building that greenhouse. It's cold here, too. I won't be planting out my warm weather veggies for another 6 weeks.

  16. Holy Moly! I've not even started mine yet. Would be easy to be too soon - we're still 8 weeks from "safe" to put outside. Though we've hit the 80's already. I don't trust it. AT this rate yuo'll be having the first tomato before MAY!

    1. Don't get too excited, David! It's only a windowsill tomato. My garden tomatoes are just beginning to sprout, and won't go outside for another 6-8 weeks.
