June 27, 2012 - The 100 Pound Mark

Today, with this beautiful bunch of baby beans,  I hit 100.5 pounds of vegetables/fruit harvested from the garden, which puts me right at the same harvest pace as my 2010 garden, and way ahead of 2011's 73.8 pounds on June 27.

    1. Kris, I will if I don't quit eating all those potatoes with butter and zucchini bread. Oh, you mean HARVEST weight!

I should be close. Last year I didn't grow potatoes, the summer squash was a bust and I grew bush butternut squash instead of the high producing Waltham. Those all add a lot of weight. This year I've also added corn.

    1. Jenny, I grow that variety every year. They are early, delicious, and freeze exceptionally well. They are a French filet bean, and I pick them very young, they tend to get tough if you let them grow too large. The plants are also very compact, and they are very productive for quite an extended period.

    2. Now that was funny sleight of hand. What harvest totals are you shooting for this year, Granny?

    3. Cloud, my aim is always 1000 pounds. I made it in 2009, and I was close in 2010, but last year was a bad year for the garden at just over 500 pounds.

    4. I was curious why there was a drastic reduction. If you downsized or didnt plant spuds.

    5. Cloud, as I told Kris (above) last year I didn't grow potatoes, the summer squash was a bust and I grew bush butternut squash instead of the high producing Waltham. Those all add a lot of weight. This year I've also added corn.

I also grew pumpkins one of those high yield years, so hopefully the extra squash and the corn will make up for that lost weight. Hard telling. Berries are way down this year (so far)and I didn't plant nearly as much lettuce (bunny died). Last year, the bad year, I harvested 45 pounds of lettuce!

  9. Lovely beans Granny. I can't believe you hit 100 lbs already. It's going to be awhile before I hit that mark. I'm sure my poundage will grow quickly once the tomatoes start rolling in!

  10. All our harvests here in the northwest are much more on track than they were last year. Thank goodness! Congratulations on getting to the 100 lb mark already you are really ramping up into the mega harvests now.

    1. Kitsap, comparisons of garden photos from last year certainly show the difference. Even though we've had the colder temperatures again this year, the garden has grown much faster than it did in 2011.

  12. I've heard the first hundred pounds are the hardest to gain.

I was looking at your forecast. It shows you are only at 58 this morning. We are already at almost 80 and looking to get to 100 again today.

    1. Langela, The Weather Channel lies. I can always add 4-7 degrees to what they show, and it was 70 (out on the patio) when I got up, before 7:30. Our temps are still about 10 degrees below normal for this time of year, and mid-80s are forecast for the next ten days.

  13. Congrats on hitting the 100 lb mark. That is something I doubt I will ever accomplish from my containers. I measure my harvest by the number of meals I get out of each variety I plant.

  14. Congratulations! I know Daphne hit the positive on her budget this past week too. Sadly, I'm still very far in the negative. But I have faith that I'll get there... one of these years. ;)

    1. Ha-ha, Stoney! I'll bet you pull ahead with your tomatoes, it will be a long time before I start harvesting any bigger than those little cherry toms.
