June 6, 2012 - Have I Toad You Lately That I Love You?

Last week I said I wished I had a toad in my garden.  Well, wishes do come true!  Today my daughter called and said there was a toad in the swimming pool, did I want it?  Of course I wanted it!

Is he adorable, or what?  He's a tiny thing, about the size of a golf ball with legs.

I made him a little toad house, and tucked it back under the flowers in the veggie garden.  I'll probably never see him again, but his chances of survival in my garden are much better than in a mobile home park swimming pool.  I hope he stays here and eats my bad garden bugs.

  1. How cute! Toads are a wonderful garden companion! I love watching them at dusk when they really start to liven up and catch bugs! Best of luck with yours! Happy Gardening! Mindy

    1. Mindy, I had a big toad in my garden at our previous house. I seldom had insect damage on any of my veggies. He was a big guy though, and I was always afraid of hurting him with the shovel while I was digging. More than once I had to move him out of my way!

  2. While Annie and Otto are adorable, your new pet is so cute I can hardly stand it. I hope he eats and eats and eats. . .

    1. Stefaneener, he is the cutest one I've ever seen! He was quite active, too. It took three tries getting him into the toad house, he kept hopping away from me. I do hope he stays in the garden.

    5. haha. That would be quite the colorful household, I imagine. A group of wacky, dirty finger nailed, gardeners squawking on about.

  6. I hope Annie doesn't eat it. That would be toadily reprehensible. And tell (Otto?) that he'd better toad the line.

    1. Lou Murray, Annie said she wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole, but she toad me a lie, 'cause I know she'd eat it if she got the chance.

  8. I used to always get toads at my last house. Never here though. I think the land of houses, asphalt, and cats that I live in just isn't conducive to them.

    1. Daphne, I had a big ugly toad in my old garden, before we moved to town. I used to find him in the swimming pool skimmer basket once in a while, and I'd have to move him back into the garden. The one thing I really remember about him was when I'd pick him up, he'd pee. Every time! I was always amazed at the sheer volume of pee that came out of him!

    2. I think the same thing when the cat at times decides he wishes to pee on the tile flooring instead of his catgenie. Amazement really. How did a 15 lb creature produce so much! Darn good thing for him, Im partial to him after all these years.

    1. Cristy, I hope my daughter finds another one...or more. I think the garden needs at least a couple of them to keep each other company.

  10. We had toads under our deck and couldn't get them to move to the garden for nothing. I need to figure out a way to lure them.

    1. Sustainably, I don't know if a toad house in the garden would make them feel more secure or not. I never had one in my last garden, but I'm trying it with this little guy.

  11. I toadally missed this post at first. We have so many toads and frogs around here. I never thought about them being useful for anything other than occupying the kids and kittens. We still have way too many bugs in my flowers, but the vegetable gardens are fairly pest-free. We have a frog out in the pool. I think it's a tree frog and the kids love to watch it hang vertically onto their hands and arms. He is a cute little guy with his suction cup legs. The bull frogs in the pond are a soothing sound at night and also really good eating over the campfire. We don't have mosquitoes so they must do something.

    1. Langela, I love little toads and frogs, but Mr. Granny is toadally scared of them! Oh, the fun we used to have, putting frogs on his belly while he was napping! Our garden toad got in the pool skimmer basket once, and Mr. G. opened it up to remove the leaves. There was the big old toad staring at him, and he threw the basket lid half way across the pool and refused to ever clean it out again!

    1. Erin, I can't find him already. Hard telling where he is, or if he likes the neighbor's garden better than mine.

  13. OMG he's cute. I hope he stays and your daughter can find more for him to hang out with. His toad house needs less rough edges so he doesn't scrape his skin on the edges. Prob needs a warm spot as well. hm. We had tree frogs in our green bean poles last year that we loved. We named them Romeo and Juliette. Do you have a name for them? heheh. LOVE the new family member!!!

    1. Amy T. the opening to the toad house is about four times the size of the toad! I don't think he goes in there, anyway. I haven't seen him since he was released.
