June 24, 2010: The First Tomato

Last year I picked my first tomato on July 10. It was a cherry tomato, from what was supposed to be a Tumbling Tom. I say "supposed", because I grew two of them from seed, and neither looked a bit like a Tumbling Tom. The vines grew huge, and the tomatoes they bore were just plain old cherry tomatoes, with no sweetness, nor anything making the flavor special. Of course, they fruited non-stop. Anyway, the first of the season was a disappointment, as most "first" tomatoes seem to be, rather tasteless and mealy in texture. I've always assumed that was because it took them so long to reach maturity in the cooler weather, as the flavor and texture never fail to improve as the weather warms.

This year I've picked my first tomato a full 16 days earlier. It is also a cherry tomato, from a Minigold plant.

Isn't it pretty? I've only tasted one yellow tomato I really liked, and that was a big Kellogg's Breakfast, which had such a special flavor I've planted it again this year.

It's not very big. About average for a cherry tomato.

Should I share with Mr. Granny, or should I just pop this entire morsel into my mouth and not tell him?

I ate half of the tomato. It wasn't very good, quite sour and the texture was rather mealy. It was about as disappointing as most of my first tomatoes have been. I can only hope the flavor improves as the weather warms.

Mr. Granny gets the other half.

  1. The first anything of the season is exciting. We planted yellow pear tomatos and can't wait until they fruit!

  2. meemsnyc, I gave away my yellow pear seeds. They were probably a better tasting variety than these, but I need to give the Minigold a chance. It might improve.

  3. lol I'm sure if it tasted like Kellogg's Breakfast you would have eaten that other half. I find the first tomatoes to be a bit of a disappointment too. But the later ones are fabulous. Occasionally though I get a good first one from the Sungold plants.

  4. Yellow pear are certainly the way to go. I just love them.

  5. Congrats Granny on your first tomato of the season! I certainly hope that you shared :) I have no idea how my cherry tomatoes taste at this point. My "Little Helper" goes out to the plant several times a day and checks them. Every time one is ripe or nearly ripe...he eats it. I did harvest that Cherokee Purple today. It will be lunch tomorrow!!

  6. Well, even if it doesn't taste that great it's still pretty.

  7. Congrats! Have you tried "Fourth of July" yet? Those are my earliest, not large at all, about 4 oz, but really tasty! You were so nice to split it with Mr. Granny!

  8. Sarı domates hiç görmemiştim. Acaba tadı kırmızı domatesten farklımı?

    Saygılar.

  9. I have some heirloom yellow pear tomatoes if you want for next year. I grew them again this year as they look so pretty in a salad. My DH just likes plain old red tomatoes, tho he is not above popping a few cherry tomatoes right from the vine. All my tomatoes are awhile from ripening yet. Do you still have my email if so let me know about the seeds (or here).

  10. Congratulations, even if it was a sour little thing. Singing, "jealous" over here!

My 3 Tumbling Tom's are growing up at this point, but look like they'll take on a "tumbling" look when they're a little bigger (and when loaded with tomatoes).

  11. Ribbit, I'm not trying any more varieties. No I'm not. Enough is enough. I have 24 more varieties to sample this year, and I'm sure I'll grow something I like. I'm determined to cut my tomato growing down to 6 plants next year. Yes, you heard me correctly, SIX plants. Well, maybe 8 or 10, but no more. I mean it!

You'd better believe I would have, Daphne. In a nanosecond! My first tomatoes always taste like store bought, but when they begin to ripen quickly, they usually turn delicious. I've only had a couple that I've been completely unhappy with, the "supposed" Tumbling Toms and another called Russian Persimmon, an orange-yellow that I found rather bland.

Robin, I shared. My Cherokee Purples, Sungold and Black Cherry all have quite a few green fruits on them, so it won't be long before we get some good tomatoes. It's 91 degrees here today, so the summer crops can finally do their thing.

Cheryl, yes it was. And early. That's all that's important at this stage of the game ;-)

    ********
Erin, no I haven't. I'm trying several early varieties this year though. This one just happened to win the race.

Fuat Gencal, En çok sarı domates tadında mülayim vardır. Ben kırmızı olanları daha iyi gibi.

(Most yellow tomatoes are bland in flavor. I like the red ones better.)

Momma_S, I have two Garten Perle plants that are tumbling, and absolutely loaded down with fruit. I thought that was what the Tumbling Tom would do, but my seeds came from Wintersown Org., and were saved seeds. It's possible they crossed or reverted back to a plain old tasteless cherry tomato. Mr. Granny thought they were good, but to me good means I eat them like candy. I didn't eat these like candy. In fact, most of them went into the pot for tomato juice or paste.

Thank you Debbie, but I am not going add any more varieties to my collection of seeds, I'm going to narrow them down to a few of my very favorites, and I have a hunch Sungold is going to be my favored yellow one. I know what you mean about pretty. Last year Kellogg's Breakfast mixed with Brandywine were our favorites. The red and yellow mix is gorgeous, and the flavors were divine. Yes, I do still have your email address.

  12. I've got my first also. They are still on the plant but I will pick them tomorrow morning. So exciting.

  13. I love how you show the tomato in your pictures - granny, you're so artistic! I'm looking forward to tasting my first tomato. I just found some teeny tiny green ones growing on my vines today!

  14. Johanna, be sure to do a taste test, and let us know!

mkimmi, you stop it right now! You're giving Granny a swelled head. If you continue with the compliments, I'll have to buy a larger garden hat ;-)

Most of my tomatoes are teeny tiny too. But I see them hiding in there!

  15. Congratulations on your first tomato!! So far I have harvested cherry sun (I think - lost tag), roma (they were small but good), and Early Girls. My tomatoes are enjoying our heatwave. I think next year I will need to get adventurous and try some of the heirloom varieties.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Well the first tomato just leads to more tomatoes. They can only taste better from here. Soon you will be dealing with heaps of various varieties of tomatoes to sample.

  17. You should be ashamed of yourself! Giving Mr. Granny your "throwaways"....

  18. ohhh no matter it wasn't of full flavour!!! it's the FIRST!!! i have quite a few tomatoes coming.. but far from any hint of any colour but green... sighhhh.... i'm fond of the little yellow pear tomatoes... and a friend gave me 1 yellow pear plant which i've been nursing along and hoping for a bountiful harvest!

  19. My first sungold tomato wasn't very sweet either, which is why I'm letting the 3 or so seemingly ripe ones that I have right now stay on the vine a bit longer.

I don't know about you but I'm predicting a great year for tomatoes!

Also, it was nice of you to share. I knew you would.

  20. What a cute little tomato!
What a shame it didn't taste very good though =/

  21. debiclegg, last year was my first year of starting my own seedlings and growing heirlooms. I'm growing them again this year, almost exclusively. I didn't keep very good records on our taste tests, so many of them had to be grown again this year. I'm determined to do better!

    ********
GrafixMuse, I bought two dozen more canning jars today. I'm ready ;-)

    ********

    EG, Hee-hee!

Roasted G, everybody seems to love the yellow pears. I remember my Dad growing them years ago, but I thought they were too bland. Maybe I just wasn't into tomatoes back then. He accidentally grew Green Grape one year, it was mismarked at the nursery, and it was a delicious one! At least I'm hoping that was what he grew, I'm trying it again this year, after a failed planting last year.

    ********
Thomas, I'm so looking forward to the Sungold. I'm hoping the first ones aren't sour and/or tasteless! I want that perfect cherry tomato...the kind you eat in the garden, because you just can't wait to take them into the house, they're too good. I've had that kind before!

  22. Not to worry, Seana. Last year I harvested about 500 pounds of tomatoes, and this year I have twice as many plants. I have a feeling there will be a good tasting tomato or two soon ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  23. First tomato? Congratulations!!! Forget about the taste. First is first - special!

  24. Tatyana, yes! YES! That's the spirit!

  26. What a beautiful yellow tomato~ hope the taste improves with the preceding batches. I had the same problem with my "California bell pepper" that turned out looking like long, lanky banana peppers. What a surprise that was!
