April 1, 2013 - Soaking and Sunning the Seedlings

Once a week I give the indoor (warm weather) seedlings a good watering in the bathtub.  The containers are filled with tepid water, and I leave the seedlings to soak it up for about an hour.  I keep a spare empty flat handy, and transfer one flat of plants over to it, then dump the water from the now empty one and transfer the other flat of seedlings over to that.  The smaller baskets have openings so the excess water can just be poured from them without removing the cups.  This once a week watering seems to be just about the perfect timing, as the seedlings are looking quite robust.  It won't be long before they will all be needing some up-potting.

I'm giving them some natural light after their soaking.  The very slight breeze, 60 to 70 degree temperatures and dappled sunlight should make the little plants very happy.

    1. Holly, I'm hoping mine can get natural light all week. The forecast looks promising, as long as we don't get wind.

    1. Lanie, that once a week may not be enough when they spend their days outside. These seedlings have been under lights until today.

  3. I do the same thing with my seedlings, when they are inside. They have a flat filled with water and I dunk them into it. The outside ones getting hardened off just get a watering can. And your seedlings are looking good. Right now I have some lettuce that is still getting hardened off, but the rest were only seeded last week. So they are just starting to come up.

    1. Daphne, we finally got our irrigation water turned on, so the garden got a good watering. That and the warm weather should really get stuff growing. I'm hoping I can let these seedlings spend all of their daylight hours outside. I let them have an hour in the sun today, then moved them onto the patio. I'll increase their sun time slowly.

    1. nancy, they are looking good. I still hold my breath until they are in the ground. Too many things can go wrong....overwater, underwater, forget to bring them in at night, sun or wind burn them! I've done them all at times :-(

    1. Tosh, both of the big black flats are filled with peppers, plus about a half dozen cups. I think I may have got a bit carried away! The others are just 4 cups of basil, 4 parsley and a few cherry tomatoes. Outside, the 6 strawberry plants are also sunning.

  7. With havin so much content and articles do you ever run
into any problems of plagorism or copyright violation?

My blog has a lot of completely unique content I've either created myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my authorization. Do you know any techniques to help stop content from being ripped off? I'd definitely appreciate it.

Would you recommend starting with a free platform
like Wordpress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I'm totally overwhelmed .. Any recommendations? Thanks a lot!

    1. John, your light setup and shelves look like mine, only mine don't have wheels. In a way I wish it did, I could roll it out to the front porch. Or grow the plants in the garage and roll them out to the driveway. It's not too difficult to get them all outside while they are small, but once they are up-potted it will be a real chore.

in the near future but I'm having a difficult time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I'm looking for

    1. Stefaneener, I'll probably be begging people to take pepper plants off my hands. Who knew the old seeds would still have 100% germination! I figured I'd get maybe one out of three seeds to grow. Now I have nearly 100 plants, and I wanted 25-30!
