July 10, 2009: Garden Shed Update

I worked on the interior of the new garden shed again today. I got all the primer and painting done, with the exception of the corners, three of which I still have to install. The wall shelves got finished, too!

I thought I was going to have to do the shelves all by myself, as Mr. H took a nasty fall onto the patio today. We have a sliding glass door that comes out of the kitchen, with two steps down to the concrete patio. I don't know where his mind was, but instead of going down the steps, he stepped over and off the side, and landed on his elbows and knees on the pavement. He got skinned up a bit, but thankfully no broken bones. At 74 years of age, it's so easy to break a hip in a fall like that. He took something for the pain and, like the old trooper he is, came out and helped me put up the shelves.

One nice thing about spending 8+ hours working on the shed, I was too tired to cook. I did, however, end up with a "garden dinner". We had it delivered from The Chinese Gardens!

My mini-greenhouse will sit on the counter where the paint and tools are now. It will take up 4' of the 8' long counter. There will be open shelves underneath for bags of seed starting mix, vermiculite, potting soil, etc.

The next 4' of counter top will be my work space. Under that will be shelves for my tool box, brad nailer, and containers of nails, screws, etc. The chest of drawers will hold miscellaneous gardening items. The top drawer is in the process of being rebuilt. The shelf over the bench is 8' long and 16" deep, and will hold watering cans, gallon jugs for measuring/mixing liquid fertilizers, potting trays, etc.

The next cabinet will hold my radio, CDs, fertilizers, garden gloves, pegs for the peg board, and the drawers will hold miscellaneous garden supplies such as drip tapes, tubing and connectors. The wall holds my larger garden tools and a broom.

The back wall holds my step stool, the door to the garden, and a hook for my garden sweater. To the right of my sweater there will be a hook and loop of rope for tying the lawn cart up against the wall. The fertilizer spreader might hang from this back wall, too. The riding and push mowers will be parked here.

On around the corner, the fetilizer spreader might have to hang from the wall on the right.

Two more shelves that we finished today. The longer one is 6', the other one just under 5', and they are 8" deep. These should hold gallon sized fertilizer containers and miscellaneous pots. The ladder fits perfectly underneath, and will come in handy once we put up the ceiling, as I'll have a hatch in it so things like irrigation pipe can be stored over the rafters.

The front door is 4' wide to accomodate the riding mower and lawn cart.

I picked the first tomatoes today! One of the Tumbling Toms gave me four sweet little ones.Several more are close to being ripe.

  1. Granny, the shed looks fantastic and I love that ladder holder, but I'm worried about Mr. H. It seems like everyone's falling down this week. Be careful, yourself!!

  2. Ribbit, it's too bad someone didn't take a photo of me in that first picture, with one foot on the ladder, one foot on the unfinished counter, the paint brush in my right hand and hanging on to a rafter with my left hand! I'm really quite agile for an old lady ;-)

  3. Great minds think alike AG... I opted for a take and bake pizza tonight rather than cook - long week at work and have been fighting a virus of some kind - decided to give the cook (me) the night off! :)

The shed looks super and what a great working area and efficient storage for your garden tasks and tools.

Hope Mr. H is feeling okay and that the bruises and stiffness are not getting too strong a hold after the fact.

I will be right behind you with the first tomato of the season. My first one is 3/4ths red and should probably be ready tomorrow or Sunday at the latest.

  4. KitsapFG, I hope that virus doesn't slow you down too much.

I'm loving the shed already, and waiting for the paint on the shelves to dry so I can begin filling them up!

Mr. H just went to the doctor this week, and got a pain med for his arthritis. This was the first time he'd tried it, and he said it worked well and fast. I'm a bit achy from the ladder climbing, reaching and stretching involved in all the painting, but I had to make do with a warm bath. Here it's not even 7:30, and I'm ready for bed!

I ate two of the four tomatoes, and they were goooood! Mr. H was going to have the other two in his dinner salad, but since I didn't cook he didn't have a salad. I think I'll go eat them right now!

  5. Mr H has my sympathy. Falling is no fun.
I hope I'm as agile as you... say about next week :)

  6. Ah, now the paint and tools corner looks much more like my way of "tidying" things, thank goodness you are human after all!

  7. Lookin' good, Granny. If we ever get a house of our own, I think I'll refer to your shed when I build mine. We don't buy because we never stay in one place long enough. We must be part gypsy, cuz we've never stayed in one place for more than 5 years, and that was just once...
Hubby's boss asked him last week if he would consider moving to San Antonio in a couple years. We both said "When should we start packing?" San Antonio is the one place we both love, for some odd reason...
Anyway, just don't work yourself, or Mr. H, too hard. It's hot out there...

  8. Talk about a super-deluxe space. Wow. You guys did great work. And durn it-you be careful with your balancing act too, or you'll end up like the mister. You may be agile, but the ground is HARD!
    Have a great weekend!

  9. Hidinginmygarden, are you planning a project for next week?

    ********

Heskie, I hate to tell you this, but do you notice how neatly stacked the paint cans are on the top of the work bench? Do you see how symmetrically the drawer parts are laid out, how carefully the drills are placed and how the miter saw is exactly centered over the post below it? Me.

Now do you notice how everything is just tossed willy-nilly beneath the bench, so if you want anything at all from the pile you must move everything? Mr. H

    ********

SB, I always enjoyed moving, not that we've moved much...4 towns in 47 years and the last 36 years in this town. It's only recently I want to just stay put and not even travel to AZ for the winter.

It's supposed to hit 98F today, but drop back into the cool 80s tomorrow.

    ********

Sue, you have a great one, too!

  10. What a nice garden shed Granny! How wonderful to have a place for everything! I'm so happy for you!!!

My heart goes out to Mr. H. May he heal quickly.

    Your first ripe tomato... YEAH!!!!

  11. Thanks, Toni. I'll be happy when it's finished, and I can get all my gardening stuff moved in!

  12. Congrats on the toms - I bet they were delicious!

  13. Love the windows and the extra wide door granny. I can already feel the organization.

  14. Desert Dame, the tomatoes were delicious, and I got 6 more today! Soon I should be inundated with tomatoes :-)

The windows in the shed are recycled RV windows, but they work perfectly! They are tinted, sliders, and have screens...what more could I ask for?

  15. Hooray for tomatoes, recycled materials, knowing when not to cook, and for efficient pain meds.

I'm a little more than half his age, and I'm creaky from shoveling. Mr. H. has my sympathy.

  16. LOL, Stefaneener! Hooray for tomatoes is right. Even though they're tiny, we've picked and eaten ten of them in two days. We don't wait for a meal, they are a garden snack.

Mr. H is feeling fine today, and drove the lawn mower into the shed to join the dump cart and push mower, and I still have a ton of room for me!

  17. Boy Granny, that shed looks great. Way more space in there than it looks like from the outside. And you sheet rocked it. Wow, you went all out. Nice work.

Sorry about Mr. H's fall. Hope he feels better.

  18. Sinfonian, I was surprised at how much room there was after putting the lawn mowers and garden wagon in there! BTW, it's not sheet rock, it's OSB with a good paint job!

Mr. H is feeling fine, no damage from the fall other than a scraped elbow. He thanks you for your concern.

  19. The shed has turned out so well, such a nice space to spend time in. Reminds me I need to organized my shed next week.

  20. The shed is looking great! Can you come over and help me organize? My place is a mess LOL

I really love it that you have a place for everything. It looks so neat and tidy :-)

  21. Dan & Judy, the last shelves have been built and are ready for paint, then I can move the mini-greenhouse in and be finished...except for a few more hooks and hangers. Of course, I'm still moving and rearranging things. It will take a while to figure out just where I want to put everything.

  22. Now I know your post is about your garden shed, but THE FIRST TOMATO? YUM! Sorry I get a little carried away but such things. I have a couple of tomatoes that are turning orange and I might be able to eat the first one tomorrow. I'm so excited.

  23. Daphne, as excited as I got about the Tumbling Tom tomatoes, and even though I said they were soooo good, they are actually rather bland and very thick skinned. I won't plant that variety again.

  24. I love how you organized the inside of your shed. Peg boards are great for organizing tools! I love the hook system you have up to hang your shovel, brooms, rakes, etc. I would love one of these. Did you buy or make this?
