March 19, 2010: Dan Showed Us His!

Dan showed us his!

Now I'll show you mine!

My faithful old garden fork.

It's certainly seen better days!

A shim holds the tines in, but she should be good for a few more years.

Show us your garden fork!

The weather was gorgeous and sunny, so I planted my peas today. Both varieties, snap and shelling, are bush varieties, so they were planted in wide rows along fence lines. The snap peas "Sugar Lace" are supposed to grow "semi-leafless, with interlocking tendrils that prevent the need for staking or trellising".

Sugar Lace snap peas, planted in a wide row along the fence line. More than 100 seeds are spaced 2" apart in all directions. Yes, I counted them.

My neighbor, Pat, was lonely after the death of her husband, just a year ago. She got herself a new companion, a Chiweenie puppy. Bandit is adorable, and just loves to play with Annie and Otto, but he has been banished from the garden area after romping through the newly planted radishes. Once daily, my "kids" get escorted through the garden gate to romp with him in Pat's back yard for a while. She doesn't have a garden in which to play.

Annie and Otto head toward the house, after a hard day's work in the garden. My hard day's work. All they did was lay in the future squash patch in the warm sunshine!

You can tell a real gardener by the cow poop on her shoes.

  2. Lookin good Granny! Now I want a big ole fork!

  3. Had to smile when I saw your picture. I immediately thought of Dan's then read your caption, to bad you couldn't put the two of them together, just like /american Gothic!

  4. Does chicken poop count, too? I've got plenty of it.
I'll never forget the first time I stepped in it barefoot, and reflexively thought "Aw, s***." Then I just had to laugh.

Love the pics, the dogs are all adorable. Garden forks I'm wary of, ever since I stabbed myself in the toe with one. I really need to wear shoes more often, come to think of it..

  5. Yay! Ribbit's going to show us hers!

Ribbit, you don't know just how much I wanted to go there ;-)

    ********
Caffienated Mom, everybody needs a good fork!

    ********
Debbie, I tried to do that, but I'd already deleted the larger photo from my camera, and the smaller one looked too fuzzy next to Dan's.

    ********
Rebecca, of course it counts! I really think some of mine is dog poop. That one shoe looks too fresh for composted cow poops!

I tried to comment on your blog this morning, but the verification word was only half showing, and there was nowhere to enter it and publish the comment. I'll try again tonight, but if it still isn't working, tell your J.R. he's absolutely adorable, and I'm happy to see someone has a bigger tongue than Otto :-) And thank you for the warm welcome.

  6. Granny you had me lol. I like your fork. Mine is not as nice as yours but I'll try and post a photo this weekend.

  7. Oh, goody...Liisa is going to show us hers! Maybe soon we'll get to look at everyone's!

  8. What an absolutely darling puppy your neighbor Pat has. I love your pix with the hat. My garden fork gets used once in a while, and is pretty ugly (rusty)

  9. I love my garden fork! It's my very favorite tool. Funny, my shoes are caked in chicken poop this year. I love poop, weird, but other gardeners understand.

  10. I'll get mine out! It's fairly new, replaced FOC by S&J after my previous Neverbend fork bent! Still, it's a thing of beauty, and handles well too.

  11. Nice photo! That's a cool fork, I like the diamond tines.

  12. I don't have one to show. :-( Oh well...i'll think of something else to show. hehe... (it'll be garden related, don't worry)

  13. LOL! Too funny! I'll show you mine later this weekend.

Bandit is so cute! It must be fun to watch the three run around on their daily play dates. I have to fence in my garden area to keep it safe from our dog, Bradie. I put it up at planting time, and take it down in fall to make cleanup easier.

The weather is so nice here too that I am tempted to plant my peas also.

  14. Zoey, if you'd ever get in gear and blog, we could see your fork :-) Whatever happened to the blog you started?

    ********
The Mom, if you love it, show it to us! Garden poop is good. Dog poop not so much.

    ********
TIG, GREAT, I'm anxious to see yours ;-)

    ********
Dan, mine doesn't hold a candle to yours. By the way, Mr. H says we are a strange bunch.

    ********
EG, you'd better get yourself one. You haven't gardened until you've used a fork.

    ********
Rachel, great! I'm making a montage of forks ;-)

Bandit is adorable, and very kissy-licky. He's also a good jumper, and I expect him to clear that 3' garden fence any day now :-(

Our days are perfect, our nights way too cold, low 30s to high 20s.

  15. Great picture AG! Your fork is testament to the durability of a few good toolds. Mine has been around too but is not quite as well seasoned as yours looks. I hate having my picture taken so not likely to do a fork and person photo - but I did feature my garden fork in the last video I made - turning over green manure crops!

The pup is darling but Annie and Otto make me smile every time I see them.

  16. Kitsap, I hate having mine taken, too! And I shouldn't have stood in front of the garden shed, as my shadow blends into my sweater and makes me look HUGE! I do wish yoou'd post yours, though. I want to make a montage of our garden forks. Why? I don't know ;-)

  17. Granny, I found the comment settings and just disabled the word verification thingy.

I'll hunt around and try to find my nemesis the fork, I'm pretty sure it's buried in the garage somewhere. I needed to find it anyway, since it's time to turn the compost pile and clean out the chicken coop.
    Again.
    And yes, I'm wearing shoes..

  18. Rebecca, I saved my comments, so I'll hurry on over and post them both at once. Glad you got it fixed! Show us your fork....did you see Ribbit's ?

  19. I love good tools that stand the test of time - it easy to get attached to them. How nice that your neighbor's new companion has some friends next door to play with. Oh, I do love your last photo and comment - so true!

  20. Thank you for reminding me about Ribbit's blog, Granny! My previous laptop died last fall and I lost all my bookmarks. It looks like I'm going to have to follow her lead on the hand fork, our large one seems to have disappeared! We must have loaned it to someone and forgotten. Some days it's all I can do to keep track of the kids. :-)

  21. The world would be boring without use strange people :-)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Noelle, the neighbor's puppy is a good companion for my lazy dogs. I haven't seen them romp and play all winter!

    ********
Kate, he's half Chihuahua and half Dachshund, they call them Chiweenies. He's skinny like the Chihuahua, but has the big barrel chest of the Doxie.

    ********
Dan, that's for sure! I love your new picture, you look like a real farmer ;-) I did some planting today, so got some use from my fork as I turned the compost under.

  23. My forks are always bending. Stupid cheap metal. Our pricey one got walked off with, of all things.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Bummer, Stefaneener! I don't have a problem with metal bending, just with the tines falling out. I've never figured out why they don't screw them in. Oh well, wooden clothespins make good shims.

  25. The garden fork is cool... nice photo... :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jannett, thank you! It's nice to see you here, I enjoy your recipes :-)

    ReplyDelete
  27. All I have is one of those hand-held fork thingies. Does that count?? ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  28. Nice! You definitely don't want to see my fork. It needs braces. The tines are all out of wack. haha.

I went out a sowed some shell peas today. We've had 5 days of sunny when and my garden is still logged in water. The mud is outrageous....I'm at my breaking point!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Chelsea, of course it does! Send me a picture, and it will go in the "I Love My Fork" montage!

    ********
Thomas, yes I do want to see your fork. Join the fun and get in the big "I Love My Fork" picture!

  30. great photo! And your yard is so GREEN!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Maybe you can tell a gardener by his/hers shoes but you can tell a farm boy by the cow shit oozing up between his toes. I didn’t think it was so funny but everybody else did when they through me out of the house. John

  32. My husband gave me a new fork (a pricey one from Johnny's) for my bday last year. I so love my new fork. The old one was a hand me down from my husbands grandmother complete with a bent tine that I used for over 20 years. Once the handle rotted out I really needed that new on.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Erin, the grass is always greener at this house. Oh, wait. We don't have any grass at our other house ;-)

    ********
Daphne, I'm terrible about leaving my garden tools out, even with that nice new garden shed. It's just easier to leave them where i know I'll be needing them again. I never clean off the dirt, either....sometimes I knock off the excess. I know, a bucket of oily sand and all that. Phooey, you can't teach an old/lazy dog.

    ********

John, I know the feeling. Not cow...dog.

  34. OK Granny! I'm in! I'll show you mine ... and I love it, but, I have a bird house sitting on the handle! I'll see if my son can snap a shot of us together ... so long as I don't scare the chicadees nesting in it :)
