  1. Nice greens Granny! You know I never thought to buy Little Gem Lettuce seeds. I've seen them but I thought they were so little, why grow them when you can grow a larger headed lettuce. They were very popular in London and Paris and they're so cute and actually the perfect size for a salad for one. I caved and bought some seeds when I got back from my trip. Glad to see you have some in your garden too!

  2. I hope you really love lettuce Granny. I had two pounds of lettuce this week and gave some of it away. I find there is only so much lettuce I can eat at a time. But then your husband eats lettuce too. My husband wouldn't touch it. Do you share with your kids when you pick so much?

And love the perfect heads. They are oh so pretty.

  3. Hey at least you have your garden planted. I can't even get mine tilled with all the rain and no let up until next Monday.

  4. Nice harvest, Gran! Our lettuces are starting to get huge as well, which is about the only thing given how cool and rainy our weather has been lately.

BTW - your garden is looking mighty nice these days.

  5. My goodness Granny...6 3/4 lbs of lettuce!! You better run out and get another refrigerator!

  6. Holly, I love the Little Gems as much for their beauty as for their flavor. They're just the prettiest little things! Those and the Austrian Red Butterhead, which is a gorgeous lettuce.

Daphne, my youngest son always takes anything I'll give him from the garden. I also make a large salad for us almost every evening, and if I wasn't out of canned tuna from Costco (Kirkland is the only brand I'll buy), I'd be having a tuna sandwich for lunch every day, piled really high with fresh lettuce. I hope I can keep it growing through the summer, for those fresh BLT sandwiches.

Wilderness, I think I'd move if I couldn't start my garden in March! I used to live in Baker City, OR. I loved the area, but hated the short growing season.

Thank you, Thomas, as is your garden. Won't it be nice when green isn't the only color we're harvesting? I'm awfully hungry for carrots and berries ;-)

Robin, I told ya so! I have a pillowcase full in my fridge, as well as a large container for Cookie's lettuce.

  7. Six plus pounds of lettuce is a LOT! My wife and I do eat a lot ourselves, but not quite that much. Little Gem is a pretty thing. Yours looks almost too good to eat.

I hope I have some this summer for sandwiches too! I just planted some 'heat tolerant' types. We will see.

  8. As usual , nice lettuce. No shame in having the same great harvest every week, right?

  9. Villager, the lettuce is loving its new location behind the shed. It's shaded by the building to the south, and a tall fence to the west, so it won't get any hot afternoon sun. I'm hoping I can keep it growing all summer, but I really don't have any heat tolerant varieties. Red Sails is usually slow to bolt on me though.

I have lettuce planted elsewhere, but the birds keep it pretty much shredded. Probably a good thing, or my harvest would be even larger. As it is, we'll soon have to begin eating salad for breakfast ;-)

  11. AG, Your beautiful harvest makes me want to go out right now and plant some lettuce! I was forgetful and didn't get any planted yet, but after seeing all of your beautiful harvest, I will. And now I also want a BLT....

  12. LOL, Nartaya! I refuse to buy those "cardboard" tomatoes from the grocery store, so I might have to have a BL instead of a BLT for now.

  13. I would go for just the L with s&p and a little mayo.

  14. Wilderness, that would work too. I see a lot of sandwiches in my future ;-)

  15. We have three young kids (5,9,10) and they all LOVE salad. I can literally pile a full plate of it and they will eat it and ask for more. I can't wait to start harvesting ours in a few weeks. Although I'm pretty sure I won't have near as much as you do and mine won't be as pretty as yours.

  17. Beautiful greens! It good that you love lettuce, there's only so much I can eat!lol! But I always plant a lot of them! I just love the way they grow so fast and they look so nice:) I will watch out for 'little gem' variety in the local stores, would love to try them!

  18. Your lettuces are so wonderful! I've been lurking around here for a bit. I told my new Iowa buddy Langela about your blog! We love it! I'm following all your tomato advice. I can't wait to see my first tomato! I have blooms on a few! I'm in Missouri zone 5B. Its been so cold and rainy here!

  19. I haven't had a tuna sandwich in a long time. Now I'm craving one. With some fresh lettuce on top and maybe some mizuna.

  20. Langela, I always grow way too much of everything for just the two of us. If I have more than we can use, I call my kids to pick some up. If there's still too much, we take it to a low income apartment complex, and the residents are more than happy to get fresh garden produce.

    Barbi, you've got a deal!

Random, Dan, From Urban Veggie Garden, turned me on to the Little Gem and Austrian Red, and now my garden will never be without them.

    ********
Deb S., thank you for loving my blog! And thank you for sending Langela my way. It's cold and rainy here, too. We broke a record for rainfall Saturday.

  21. Daphne, I just returned from Costco with my supply of tuna. Tomorrow I'll be eating a tuna on cracked wheat, with all the lettuce I can pile on the thing!

  22. I was just thinking about tuna salad the other day! I have a couple of cans of it in the pantry and should just make some for lunch this week.

Your greens area gorgeous and what a bunch of them you are harvesting now!

  23. Kitsap, I'm getting everyone hungry for tuna, I think the fishing industry should give me royalties!

We actually have eaten three heads in two days, not counting what the rabbit consumed. I love those small, crisp heads of Little Gem. I hope I put some of those in the mix I planted. I just put all my leftover seed in a shaker and whatever comes up will be transplanted!

  24. I can never grow big lettuce like yours! We have not eaten any lettuce this year. Beautiful lettuces.

  25. Malay-Kadazan Girl, thank you! The weather has been perfect for lettuce this spring.
