June 16, 2011 - Goodbye, Old Friend

Goodbye, old friend. You've served us faithfully and well for ten years now. You've taken us through deserts, up mountainsides, down rocky washes. You've made ten trips to Arizona, with loads that would break the backs of most, and ten trips back home. You've made so many trips to Mexico you can now speak the language. OK, strike that last comment. In all that time, you've never let us down. But, dear friend, your mileage has reached the point where you, like us and the aging rabbit, need to go into retirement. We'll miss you.

Hello, new friend! Not brand spanking new, but a 2004 Silverado, with only 38,000 miles. The full sized back seat will be comfortable for Annie and Otto when we head south for the winter. No rough roads for this baby, as we opted not to go for another 4-wheel drive. I hope it serves us as well as the Ranger has.

  1. AG! You cannot start a post like that! I thought the worst, just the absolute worst! I am glad that it was not what I thought. And congrats on th new wheels =)

  2. Oh I love the Ranger! Poor thing... did it go to a good home?! Tell Mr. Granny he needs some sweet rims to roll Annie and Otto around in style, LOL

  3. Oh boy.....what a great truck!! Are you allowed to haul poo in it????

  4. A new car! Or, well, vehicle. Looks good, congratulations! But it's hard to say goodbye to a car that has served you well, and has proven reliable.

  6. Erin, a full back seat and chrome running boards should be good enough for the pups. Otto's going to be upset when he sees haw far it is from the back seat to the console. He thinks consoles are his special seat. At least it's wide enough to hold him if he can manage to get to it.

Robin, of course not. You can't believe how clean it is, there isn't even a scratch on the bed. We'll probably never remove the shell, it's all painted and striped to match. Previous owner traded it in on a new Corvette. With such low mileage, I think it must have been very gently used.

Son John says he'll haul the poo for me :-)

Liisa, Alison & Ginny, thanks. I think we'll like her when we start driving her. She'll probably stay in the garage until time to head south.

  7. The title, to me, suggested retiring some old garden tool! Congrats on the nice truck!

  8. Random, or maybe retiring Mr. Granny? LOL!

I did retire my old garden fork (broke the handle off), and bought a new one this year.

  9. Sweet new ride! But really? What good is a truck you can't haul poo in? Get your ranger back just for dirty jobs. We had a 76 Ford full sized for that for decades. Hehe

  10. Sinfonian, they actually gave us a pretty good trade in allowance for the Ranger. More than double what they would have given us for the Chrysler (2 years newer) when we traded for the Malibu last year. Being the Off Road 4-WD, it held it's value much better. I made John promise to haul poo for me before I committed to the Silverado. Now I have 2 "Pewter" colored Chevies in the garage!

  11. Nice truck, looks like it was babied! We traded in our Ford Sport Trac truck last summer. End up with a new Toyota Tacoma. I have not decided if I really like it yet but it is really good on gas.

  12. Dan, it was definitely pampered. No scratches, no rock chips, spotless interior and exterior, one owner, local. And just over 5000 miles per year average mileage (he traded it in for a new Corvette). We couldn't pass it up. It also will get better gas mileage than the Ranger, even with the larger engine. It was manufactured in Canada, so you know it's a good vehicle ;-)

  13. That's right, they make them just up the road from Brantford. With the dollar the way it is I'm not sure how many they are building here now though.

Trucks are the best, you can just load them up with almost anything and go.

  14. Well, congrats or I'm sorry-I don't know which to say!! It's so hard to give up a faithful vehicle (we TRIED a couple years ago, but just couldn't do it!), but the new baby is sharp!
Ours hit 205,000 miles now -and here we were worried at 138K. We're still "looking" , but we love our girl so much and she's set up perfect for our super long road trips.
Hope you have as great a luck as you did with the old! Enjoy!

  15. Wishing you many years of safe travels in the new rig!

  16. That's a really good find. Good used trucks (low mileage-good shape) are a hot commodity and usually get snapped up as soon as they are available. Your older truck was a real work horse though and I would be sad to see it go too.

  17. Nice new vehicle. Congrats...

  18. Wait a minute! How come no one has mad the call on "heading South for the winter again" yet. I thought this year you were staying put?
Nice truck BTW! ;-) My honey is JEALOUS!

  19. Sue, 205,000 miles? We were concerned with 144,000 miles! The Ranger was beginning to nickel and dime us to death though. We had spent $750 for a complete tune-up just over a year ago, and she was starting to miss again, so we figured we'd be smart to trade her in while she was still running. She's been over a lot of rough off road country in the past ten years.

Thanks, Kelly. We were actually hoping we wouldn't have to travel so much, but it didn't happen :-(

    Thanks, Sarada.

Barbie, the sale fell through. In fact, the day we bought the "new" truck we got a call from the realtor. The same woman who had tried to buy it before (she bailed out after a home inspection that found "the furnace filter is too hard to remove") now wanted to buy it again.....for $15,000 less than her original offer and with all furniture included. Of course, we rejected that offer, as the first time we had agreed on a price (sans furnishings) that put us well below the break even point, we certainly weren't going to drop it even farther! So now we're back to...if we can't sell it, we'll have to use it.

  20. Kitsap, I almost missed your comment! Yes, we happened to see this pickup last weekend, when the business was closed, and we both agreed we'd like to have it. I did my research, and found the price was spot on with Kelly Blue Book prices, and got an idea what ours was worth. Monday, Mr' G drove by and came home disappointed, as he thought it was gone. Wednesday morning we decided to look again, and they had just moved it to another area of the lot. They are the same company we bought the Malibu from last year, and the salesman actually remembered our names when he came out to the lot! They were easy to deal with, gave us what we wanted as a trade in, and it was easy as pie....except the part where I had to write the check. I left out a zero and darned near got a REALLY good buy! LOL
