January 18, 2012 - Winter is Here

We woke up to the first snowfall of the season. Having spent all of their winters in Arizona, Annie and Otto have never seen snow before. Otto was scared of it, and refused to go off the patio. Annie studied it for a few seconds, then tentatively stepped into the cold, wet mess. Of course, Annie's belly drags on bare ground, so you can imagine how deeply it was immersed into the snow! She wasn't impressed, and immediately returned to the patio and back inside through the pet door. Mr. Granny had to take both dogs out front under the pine trees, so they could pee on bare ground!

  1. We haven't had snow here since that crazy Halloween snow storm. I would really like to have at least one good snow this winter!

I bet those two were quite a sight out there!

  2. Mr. Granny is very kind. That looks like more snow than we've seen all winter. Belle's coming your way next week. She'll be in the Seattle area visiting her parents. To bad that's not quite close enough to visit you. I would've invited her to come over to your place for a cup of tea. Ha!

  3. Robin, it looks like we have about 6" so far, and it's still coming down. It's supposed to be a one day thing, warming up into the 40s by tomorrow.

Jody, I'd sure have that tea pot on for her if she were closer....but we're about 250 miles east of Seattle!

  4. It snowed here too yesterday. But it was all melted by the time I got up this morning. My dogs used to love the snow. But then they were big dogs so only when it piled up to feet did they have trouble.

  5. Daphne, our temp has plunged down to 26F, so our snow isn't going to melt today! Annie has been good to go under the trees (the snow is drifting under there now), but Otto is squatting at the edge of the sidewalk! He is such a wuss!

  6. No snow here since that October snow. The temp's vary from subtropical one day, to frozen tundra the next.
Annie and Otto remimd me of my parents Norwich Terrier. We nicnamed him cigarette so we could take him out for a 'Drag" :)

  7. LOL, Ed....I've never heard of a dog named Cigarette, but we do have a friend who's dog's name is Whiskey. He says Whiskey has always been his best friend :-)

  8. I'm so out of the loop! Did you not go to Arizona this year? The snow is pretty and it looks like with the fantastic renovations you're doing it's good the weather is bad so you're not so distracted by the garden. ^^

  9. Jenn, we went to AZ in mid-October, and two weeks after we got there the property sold! We were back home before Thanksgiving....for good!

  10. There is never much snow in NC..but a lot of icy roads in winter, and more hale storms I've ever seen.

  12. Ginny, we usually have quite mild winters. Some years we don't get any snow, some years we get quite a bit. It seems like we get a lot less now than we did 30 years ago. I have pictures of my kids in snowdrifts up to their shoulders in the early 80s, now a 6" snowfall is considered a big one.

  13. How funny that they had not seen snow before! And also, how very thoughtful of Mr. Granny to take them to a more suitable bathroom spot.

Although maybe there was an ulterior motive. If he had not escorted them to bare ground, would they have just done their business inside?

  14. Prairie cat, I think Annie would hold it until she burst. Otto, on the other hand just might go inside. Someone did once last summer and I know it must have been him, as Annie couldn't get back on the bed by herself and she was still in bed. Poor baby, he couldn't help it. I had the bedroom door shut, so he couldn't get to the pet door to go outside.

We are used to escorting them out at night. In AZ, we never let them out the door alone after dark, because of the coyotes. Here they have the pet door and a safe back yard, so they are on their own.

  15. That made me laugh, because we had the opposite experience in AZ... our dog wouldn't go for the longest time because there was no grass where we were! Then the poor girl finally went off the beaten path and came back with her paws caked in those stickaburrs, I think everyone out there called them goat heads. Our poor dogs LOL! I've been thinking of you watching the weather, hope you are getting through it okay!

  16. Ahhh....snow...what is that mysterious white stuff? Ha. We NEVER get snow like that. You'd laugh if I posted pics of our last "snowfall". Sounds like fun though. Stay warm. Hot chocolate is ALWAYS a good way to warm up. :-)

  17. Erin, I always had to laugh at A & O when we'd get home in the spring and get their pet door in. They would get so excited to see that grass, they'd run around and roll in it and just go crazy! We had a dirt/sand yard in AZ, and they didn't spend much time on it. At least it was easy scooping ;-)

1st. Man, I've been in the recliner, in front of the fireplace, with a fat dog on my lap and another at my feet. That kept me warm...now off to bed!

  18. Beautiful. Too funny about the pups. :-D

  19. That is so funny. Who could blame them? I wouldn't want to drag my belly through the snow either. Those little dogs are going to need their own paths shoveled all winter it seems- so cute! Or maybe booties and a jacket?? :)

  20. Kelly, my son came over and shoveled out a large keyhole shaped area for them, where they would be in contact with the grass. They won't go near it! They still stand at the front door and wait for Mr. Granny.
