January 23, 2012 - Where There's a Will

There's a way.

I really needed some seed starting supplies from the garden shed, but the snow is still about 8" deep between here and there.

I've seen some of those cute boots a few of you wear, as well as some that are not so cute, but I've spent the last dozen or so winters in Arizona. We don't do cute boots down there! At least I didn't. What to do, what to do? Well, where there's a will, there's a way. Nothing is going to keep old Granny from that garden shed today!

Hmmmm. It's not snow any more, it's an ice skating rink. That freezing rain the other night, as well as a couple of days in the 40s and nights in the 20s have formed a crust on the snow that's thick enough to hold my weight. Getting to the shed is now a matter of just staying on my feet rather than wading through snow.

Aha! Once I reach the sunshine, I break through the crust. I still don't go deep enough to warrant wearing these fancy "boots"!

Proof as to where I've been.

This is all I could manage to carry while skating across the yard, but it's a start. The 2012 gardening season can now begin!

  2. Thanks, Megan. Seed starting is always breath holding time for me. You'd think I'd be used to it by now!

  3. You need treads to go out onto that ice-packed snow! Now that you're home, it's time to invest in boots. I did that last winter when we had two heavy snows before January 1. There's been nothing so far this year. No broken hips wanted!!!

  4. Granny, you are lucky that you didn't break your neck!! You really should have done a video :) Yippee to the start of the gardening season!

  5. I think it is time to go shopping. Now that you don't have your AZ place you need to get boots for the winter. Those plastic baggies only make it more of a skating rink. I bought myself two pairs of boots this winter. For some reason when we moved the boots didn't come with me and I had trouble finding boots I liked last winter.

  8. Good one you. They're very fetching boots; I'm sure you could market them. Before you know it, kids will be shooting each other for their bag-boots!

  10. Those are Redneck Snow Boots, they are very popular here! LOL I only have nice snow boots because I came here from Minnesota, so really I am out of fashion here but you would fit right in! :)

  11. Looks like an adventure! Ingenious using the rope light for heat. Heckofalot cheaper then the heating pads I use.

  12. David, someone commented on Robin's blog that the rope lights don't give off any heat. WRONG! With an instant read thermometer, it was 68.3 on the counter in the bathroom, 99.8 under the rope lights and 86.4 inside the domed container. That is one very short rope light, I think 6'.
