July 14, 2012 - In a Jam

This afternoon I finished off the apricots, and ended up with another 15 pints of Apricot-Pineapple Jam to go with the five pints I made last night.  That should keep Mr. Granny happy for an entire year, with a few left over for the "young" son who supplied the apricots and the "old" son who gifts me with canning jars.  There was just enough left over for us to sample.

  2. Looking at those pretty jars I was feel so motivated to do some canning. I went and bought 10lbs of cherries which incidently came from Pasco, luckily they were on sale for $1.88 per pound.

    1. Good for you, Shoba! That was a great price for cherries. Do you live near Pasco?

    2. No, I am way down south on the gulf coast. Wish I was near Pasco to enjoy the cooler weather.

    1. Yep, Texan, it's yummy! Not quite as yummy as the raspberry freezer jam I'll make next. I only got enough raspberries for one batch this year :-(

  4. Awesome! You have been busy! I think we were both very busy on this "National Can It Foward" day! I was in a bit of a jam today as well! Your "Apricot-pineapple Jam" sounds amazing. I have never heard of it and would love to get the recipe! Happy Gardening and Jamming! Mindy

    1. Mindy the link is right there, just point at Apricot-Pinapple Jam and click. It's an MCP (Kraft) recipe. Tons of sugar in it :-O

  5. That jam sure looks good... I guess it's better than being in a pickle, LOL

    1. Ed, I was in such a pickle two years ago, I don't need to get into another one until (probably) next year! I might make a bit more sweet relish this year, but that's about it. I overdid the strawberry jam last year too, so I didn't have to make any this year.

    1. Jenny, I don't have any fruit trees, so I'm always happy when someone wants to get rid of something as good as apricots. My old neighbor, who moved in 2010, always gave me free reign to her peach tree. The fruit wasn't nice enough for canning, but it made great jam. Same with her apple tree, that gave me applesauce and apple butter. The new neighbor doesn't share.

  7. I have got to make jam this year. We had so much excess from 2010 that I just did not bother doing any in 2011. I am all out now though, so jam needs to be made this year. Your jars look so sunny and delicious!

    1. Kitsap, that's what I did with peach and strawberry. However, I didn't make nearly enough raspberry, and this year I didn't have very many berries. I did save up just enough for one batch of jam, and I'm not sharing it with anybody....I grew the raspberries, I picked them and I'll jam them....I think I deserve to keep it all for myself!

  8. That is a great amount of jam and my mouth waters thinking about having some on toast or biscuits! Having just the extra sitting next to your jars is perfect, some for now, and some for later. Hope your heat wave breaks soon...

    1. Gracie, it was beautiful, mid-80s, out in the garden tonight. I actually got a bit of work done out there! Biscuits for breakfast sounds fine to me. I can make half of them into shortcakes for the week's strawberry harvest!

  9. that there is a big ol mess o'jam! lol I think you might need some insulin to go with it! Looks fantabulous though.
We had a good day, overcast and not too hot, around 75. Got a lot done. Sent u pics of my harvest du jour. Tatos, shelling and snow peas, shallots that didn't make it into the picture, and small carrots. They coulda gone longer but I'm impatient!
I had so much fun digging potatoes and when I was done, both times, i had to take not one but TWO baths to get clean. First was de-mudding and 2nd was normal bath.

  10. I make a bit of jam, but I really don't do much because I just don't eat a lot of it. Some but not a lot.

    1. Daphne, I like jam, Mr.Granny will only eat apricot-pineapple or grape jelly. I make the berry jams for me and my boys. Daughter Amy's family doesn't eat it either, but Amy will take apple butter off my hands.

  11. How beautiful your jars look. I have been canning like crazy this past couple weeks and I am finding that it is very therapeutic for me. Although I am tired at the end of a long canning day, I am so pleased with what I have accomplished. I will have to try this recipe. Thanks for sharing it!

    1. Joelle, I love the look of all the filled jars on the shelves. It's so much more rewarding than hiding things away in the freezer. Now I have to find room on those shelves!

  12. Probably my favorite season -- jam!! Looks lovely.

  13. That jam looks delicious! I have never had an apricot, though. I have so much jam and jelly on our shelves. Funny thing, though, we don't eat a whole lot of it. It takes so long for us to go through it. But that is ok for years like this when mulberries were non-existent and we still have some jam from last year.

    1. Langela, I have peach and strawberry jams and apple butter from 2010. I'm the only one who eats those, so I guess I should give them all to my boys and start over :-)

  14. How exciting! Looks declicious. If 2nd Man bakes some bread, can we come on over? LOL! Do you have other stuff you canned on your shelves? You should line them all up nice and pretty and take some pics. I bet they are beautiful all together.

    1. 1st. Man, of course you can! I have the canned goods, what's left of them, tucked away wherever I can find the room. I was looking for pictures taken during a canning season, and I had a pretty good post here:

  15. Looks so good, and I like than preserving via canning is not dependent on electricity. I’m paranoid about filling a freezer and having the power go out and losing all that food. With the storm we had recently the city actually set up special food garbage collection points. Besides, canned foods are so pretty!
