August 25, 2012 - Hell Froze Over Today

Yes, Hell froze over today, and I have the picture to prove it!

Mr. Granny picked up a paint brush and helped!  You can see in the picture how much of a color change we're doing.  It doesn't show so well on the shadier areas of the house.

I didn't accomplish as much today, as it got too hot to paint by 11:00 AM.  I did get all of the garage door trim done, which took a long time.  I had to tape off the door edging and do some scraping, filling and priming on the lower boards between the doors.  Light fixtures had to be dropped down and painted behind.  There was just a lot more finicky work to do today.  I went back out around 3:00 PM, but by four o'clock my body just gave out.  I have much more energy in the mornings.  Tomorrow I can trim that shrub and finish this side, and we can both work on the south end that Mr. Granny started today.

    1. Thanks, Julie. It's actually the same color as the primer on the new boards. We kind of liked it, but didn't know what it would look like as a whole house application. It got the thumbs up, so I get to go buy more paint!

    1. Alison, I couldn't believe it when he came out and asked where he could paint! He did a good job, too. In the 50+ years I've known him, he's only had a paintbrush in his hand maybe once or twice. He did put some primer on the garden shed.

  3. Guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.... Maybe he thought if he helped he would be guaranteed a yummy dinner since you would be less tired after a long day painting?

    1. Nartaya, just the opposite....he called and had Chinese food delivered, because he knew I was exhausted last night. Well, that and I forgot to thaw out the chicken ;-)

  4. LOL!
Well, it did indeed freeze over!
So, I guess I can expect those last 30 pounds to just "fall off" me ?? Cuz that's what I've always said would happen when hell froze over......
I wouldn't say it too loudly, but I used to paint houses for a living. And cripes, I hated prep work. Painting is fun. Prep work is NOT. But it's key to a great job--and it looks like you're well on your way to that.
Now, have I been sweet enough to get you to unlock the doors and quit hiding your carrots?
    LOL!

    1. Sue, I hope he can move this morning and finish that side of the garage! It will be a big help to me if I can get him out there for even a couple of hours a day. It also keeps him from sitting in the lawn chair and watching me while I paint, which drives me absolutely nuts. I don't want anyone watching me or talking to me when I'm deep into my work, I find I have to stop and pay attention to them rather than keep that brush moving.

Yes, the prep work is the hardest and most time consuming. Mr. Granny just doesn't realize it's not just about slapping on a coat or two of paint. It's caulking, scraping, spackling, sanding, priming and, most important of all, beginning with a clean surface.

      You've been a good girl. I'm dangling a carrot ;-)

  5. I've made my husband paint at times. He always complains. But he never seems to hate the chore when we do it. I find painting by myself boring, but with someone it is fine.

    1. Daphne, I'm just the opposite. I don't like any distractions while I'm working, no conversation and nobody watching me. I'd like to have my mp3 player plugged into my ears, but then Mr. Granny gets testy if he wants to talk and I don't hear him. Maybe I'll take a radio out with me today and annoy the neighbors.

    2. I'd so have my stories playing if I did it myself. Actually if Joel and I did it together we might have something on to listen to anyway. I love listening to stories while I works. I put in my garden that way. I'm sure when I decided to start double digging the garden again I'll listen to more.

    3. Daphne, Mr. G. gabbed at me all day, but how can I complain as long as he brings me ice cold drinks?

  6. Granny, I think it's great that Mr. Granny can still surprise you after all these years!! :) The house is going to look great!

    1. Robin, I hope the house turns out OK. I'm not worried about the siding, but the facia boards in front are really in rough shape. One section will have to be replaced, as there was a leak in the rain gutter that rotted it out, and the ones on the end of the garage where Mr. G was painting are really rough and weathered. It's going to take a lot of scraping and priming on those, and that's way high up on a ladder. Assuming the neighbor will let us borrow her really tall ladder. The last time we painted, we put our tall ladder in the bed of the pickup to give us the height. Now we don't own a pickup!

  7. Ahh, painting. What a beautiful past time. Kind of like weeding. Only you get to stand up when you paint. I'm not crazy about weeding.
Good that you are getting a few chores done around the house. I'm looking forward to getting some accomplished here. The garage roof needs fixed, a few holes need repaired in the house where flickers made an entrance, etc. We have a list, which keeps growing!

    1. Lori, keeping up a home or garden are never ending chores, aren't they? It seems there is always something needing to be done.

  8. Lookin' good. We've been doing a lot of painting here too. It seems to take forever, with the heat and our limited energy. When my back starts hurting, I know it's time to stop. I like the colors of your house. Take it easy and don't overdo it.

    1. Lana, it's my legs and feet that bother me. Probably from getting up and down from the ladder, and from standing on the concrete driveway for hours. My entire body ached last night, so I soaked in a hot bath, then put on my robe and laid down for just a few minutes. That was around 7, and I woke up at 9:30 and got ready for bed!

  9. The farmhouse is going to need to be painted. I put it off because it was too hot, so I thought "meh, we can do it in the Fal". In April/May, the Fall seems far away. Now the Fall is around the corner. Maybe we'll do it in the Spring, ha. Great job so far and tell Mr. Granny he is a good man to come out and help. Like Lana above said, don't overdo, it's not a race, just take your time and be careful.

    1. 1st. Man, I'm trying to do just what I feel like I can without pushing myself, but it seems like I always have this old man standing behind me saying "You're going to paint that board, aren't you?" "I see a spot you missed over here", "Another hour and you should have that part finished". But the worst I hear is "You'd better quit long enough to feed the dogs" or "Don't you think you should start dinner?" LOL!!!!

    1. Thanks, David. BTW, you were in the spam again! This time I took a screen shot, so I could find your comments, and they are showing up in the "published comments", unlike those I saw yesterday. It's not from posting from work, because Langela, who comments daily, was also in the spam today.
