July 14, 2009: A Kitchen Bouquet

A bouquet of dill and basil on the counter is not only pretty, it makes the kitchen smell delightful!

And the first strawberry shortcake of the season is heaven on the taste buds.

  1. My husband is always bringing me treats from his work (they put out treats for the customers but it is never all eaten). Once I got strawberry shortcake. None of the strawberries I buy from the farmers market end up that way. I just eat them. It is so much less work. I can be so lazy sometimes.

  2. Daphne, we live for strawberry shortcake at our house! I finally picked enough berries for two of us to have a generous serving, then grandson Kevin showed up for dinner. I'd been tossing strawberries into a bag in the freezer when there were only a handful to pick, so I took them out, coursely chopped them in the food processor and added them to the bowlful I had for our dessert. That gave us enough for the two of us and a kid with a hearty appetite and a love of strawberries.

  3. Yummmm.... I can just taste that delicious strawberry shortcake!

We've been enjoying lots of strawberries here too. They get eaten so fast!!! Don't know if I'll have enough to make jam....

  4. Toni, I know I won't have enough for jam this year, but next year...I'll bet I do! I'm going to start rooting runners now, and fill the strawberry bed PLUS put some around the patio as a ground cover.

  5. LOL! I just did the same thing yesterday. Had to cut some bloom stalks off of one of my basils, and decided, rather than toss all that lovely fragrance into the compost bin, I'd bring it in and make a bouquet. Smells great every time I walk by.

And the strawberry shortcake looks yummy.

  6. SB, I think that makes more sense than flowers in the kitchen! I might have to keep some dried dill heads around just for "floral" arrangements.

  7. The dill is beautiful! I kept waiting for mine to bloom last year and they never did, but it always smelled fantastic. The shortcake looks fantastic. Hope Mr. H is feeling better after his tumble.

  9. Berries, shortcake, and whipped cream - heavenly combo. I have got to start hiding the strawberry harvest so I can make something yummy with it like this! So far, the only confection I have managed to make with the strawberry harvest was a strawberry rhubarb pie - the rest have been eaten as fast as I pick them.

The aromatic arrangement is a fun idea.

  10. KitsapFG, yes, the berries go all too fast! We've had a few pickings large enough to enjoy over ice cream, but this was the first that was enough for real shortcake!
