August 27, 2009: I Get Around!

An evening at the Benton - Franklin County Fair......

With the scents wafting from Old McDonald's Barn

And its inhabitants

Mingling with the aromas of the food court.

All those foods that we normally deem too unhealthy for everyday eating are tempting me. The curly fries in their sizzling, oily splendor. The nachos, oozing cheese and sour cream.

Daughter, Amy, opts for an ear of corn on a stick,
dipped in butter and sprinkled with Parmesan cheese.

I, on the other hand, prefer to consume mega calories with a funnel cake,
dusted with cinnamon sugar.

Kevin and Alicia head for the midway,

Where they will spend an evening on the carnival rides.

Amy and I head for the main stage, to rock out with The Beach Boys.

I Get Around!

  1. Looks like a fun outing. Must have been cool to see the Beach Boys too! You know I have never had a funnel cake before, I really should try one. The corn with parm looks excellent, never tried that before either.

  2. Thanks for the video, granny. Now, when are you gonna do a video of the garden? I want everyone to hear how weird you talk. Ha!
    Funnel cakes are so tempting.....

  3. Dan, the way most of the Hispanics around here eat corn is to mix mayonnaise with Parmesan and spread it over hot corn. My daughter and granddaughter say it's delicious, but I think it's a sin to ruin that gorgeous corn by smearing it with anything but real butter!

EG, my garden is in such a mess right now, I would be embarrassed to take a video of it. I've been pulling those giant marigolds and the last of the infected tomato plants and just piling stuff in the dog kennel. It's nothing I would want in the compost, so I have to put it in the garbage, a little at a time. I'm finding a lot of crabgrass under the foliage! I have a lot of work ahead of me to get the garden back in shape....but at least it's still producing.

  4. Our fair is coming soon as well! The boy just has way too much fun and I can't wait to now see the girl enjoy it as well since she's getting old enough.

  5. I'm glad you opted for the funnel cake. How often do you have a chance for one??? Sweet corn is great, but funnels only come around once a year!
    Have a great weekend AG!

  6. Ohhh, that funnel cake is making me hungry!

  7. I always go for the fried dough, which is a lot like a funnel cake. I always put a lot of cinnamon sugar on tip. I don't eat that way at home, but I treat myself when I'm out.

  8. Granny, My big box is still very nice looking, but I let the powdery mildew take hold of the pumpkin/melon box. The tomato plants are looking pretty rough, too - but still giving me about 15-20 tomatoes/day. Actually, my yard is nothing but crabgrass, so I understand. That is one aggressive weed!

  9. Ribbit, I hope you don't do what I did....paid $50 for two carnival wrist bands for two kids, then found out they only went on three rides in four hours because they couldn't come to an agreement on the rides. I was hopping mad, they knew it (so they went on one more ride), and I'm not buying wrist bands ever again.

Sue and Kristen, I wish I'd got the strawberry topped funnel cake...so messy, but sooooo good!

Daphne, we call those "elephant ears". They are good, I was torn over which to buy! Funnel cake won.

EG, the only reason I have a lawn service is to apply the crabgrass pre-emergent, because we normally don't get home early enough in the spring. They didn't do a great job of it this year, so I think I'll just save myself the money and hope I can get it done early enough myself next year. Actually, Bermuda grass is the really obnoxious one in my yard.

  10. Don't rub it in! You know this time of year I get all upset since I'm missing the MN State Fair back home! Anything on a stick, YUM!

  11. Oh, Erin...I know. I just love fair food. Hand dipped foot long corn dogs and curly fries put me into a fit of ecstasy! It's getting terribly expensive, though. I had to pay $7.50 for that funnel cake. The strawberry one was a dollar more!

  12. Corndogs, Old McDonald's Farm, AND the Beach Boys. Could it get any more American?

    Glad you had fun!

  13. Heavens! Fairs used to be some great CHEAP entertainment. Obviously I haven't been to one in a while.
Hubby and I saw the Beach Boys at Great Adventure a few years ago. They put on a great show; it was tons of fun to see an audience of all ages enjoying the show.

  14. Kelly, you've got that right!

SB, it can still be cheap if you stay away from the food and the carnival. But a bottle of water is $2.50, lemonade $4.50, and most hamburgers are $4 and up (mostly up). The $3 hot dogs are the nastiest, cheapest chicken franks! It only cost me $5 for admission (senior ticket) and Amy $12. That covers the entertainment, so you can spend an entire day on exhibits and entertainment for cheap.

  15. Fairs are so much fun! I like to just eat my way through the place! Gyro's, spaceburgers, caramel apples, beaver tails, and funnel cakes... all classic fair foods and not worth a hoot outside of that venue.

  16. KitsapFG, it's a good thing I only go to one a year, or I'd have to buy bigger jeans!

  17. For goodness sakes! I havent been to the fair in years but those prices are outrageous!
I'm glad you got to see the BBs.
I'm with you on the corn....plenty of butter and nuttin else.

  18. MissyM, I even like good corn naked! Naked corn, not naked me ;-)

  19. We got to see our favorite band, Bowling for Soup, at our county fair. So much fun! I'm looking forward to the years when the kids are so big we can all ride the rides. Did you enter anything?

  20. Stefaneener, no I didn't. I was too busy putting it in jars ;-)
