August 8, 2009: Monday Harvest

Each week Daphne's Dandelions hosts Monday Harvest. Be sure to visit her blog to see who is harvesting what this week!

I didn't get photos of everything harvested this week. Sometimes I just needed something in the kitchen, so I logged the weight, but didn't have time to take pictures.

August 3 (no photo); 10 ounces zucchini, 8 ounces tomato, 5 ounces crookneck, 4 ounces cucumber. Total for the day 1 pound 11 ounces.

August 4; 1 pound 4 ounces strawberries, 12 ounces crookneck squash, 12 ounces butternut squash, 2 pounds 4 ounces cucumbers, 4 ounces parsley, 15 pounds 3 ounces tomatoes. Total for the day 20 pounds 7 ounces.

August 6; 24 pounds tomatoes, 3 ounces crookneck squash, 3 pounds 4 ounces cucumbers. Total for the day 27 pounds 7 ounces.

August 7 (no photo); 1 pound peppers, 1 pound 1 ounce cucumbers, 1 pound strawberries. Total for the day 3 pounds 1 ounce.

August 8; 31 pounds tomatoes, 4 pounds 8 ounces cucumbers, 2 pounds 8 ounces zucchini, 12 ounces crookneck squash, 7 ounces jalapeno peppers. Total for the day 39 pounds 3 ounces.

August 9; 1 lb. 12 oz. bell peppers (one pepper not pictured), 6 oz. cucumber (not pictured) , 7 oz. pole beans. Total for the day 2 pounds 9 ounces.

Total for week: 94 pounds 5 ounces
Total for 2009: 381 pounds 12 ounces

This week has been a busy one for for preserving the harvest. First there was the pumpkin, which took most of the day to cook, puree, bake a pie and freeze the remainder. Then there were cucumbers to be made into relish and pickles, tomatoes to be made into sauce and ketchup, and peaches from the neighbor's tree to be turned into jam. Tomorrow will be another "tomato day". There are still about thirty pounds (or more) of tomatoes to be canned, and I'm wanting more sweet chili sauce, so that's what is on my agenda.

Today I canned 10 pints of tomato sauce, 3-1/2 pints of sweet pickle relish, 4 pints of bread & butter pickles and 4-1/2 pints of peach jam.

All these tomatoes are waiting to be canned tomorrow, and there will be more to pick, too.

  1. That's obscene. It's vegetable porn. No one grows that much in just one week.

    I knew you were amazing!

  3. Granny - I bet I haven't got 30 lbs. of tomatoes all year! I wish my climate was more like yours sometimes....I envy your garden, and what you've canned so far.

  4. I am green with envy over those tomatoes! What a great harvest you are getting. Could you refresh my memory on how many tomato plants you ended up with this year? Of those, which has been the best producer / best tasting in your opinion?

  5. Ribbit, John and EG; I'm 70-1/2 years old, and this morning I feel like I'm 85. I'm about to go out and throw tomatoes at passing cars. Instead, I'll try to catch up on the already picked tomatoes, 'cause they're ready to pick again. I wish I could send them to y'all. Sheesh, I'm beginning to sound like EG and ribbit.

KitsapFG, I'll try to find time to do a rundown on production and taste (the best producers haven't been the best tasting). I started to keep track of which variety was which, but there were so many I resorted to just picking and putting them all together. I need to go out and pick one "perfect" tomato from each, mark them and do a taste test.

  6. Wow, almost a 100 pounds in a week! You should open a veggie stand, you would make a killing. Everything looks great.

  8. I think today I'm most jealous of your strawberries. I was happy with the early spring harvest, but I've got nothing since then. Well, a few, but not enough to talk about.

  9. A tomato taste test trial would be fun to read about!

  10. Dan, I just give it away ;-)

Selina, I wish you would! I think I might have overdone it with the tomato plants this year, LOL!

Cheryl, those strawberries are awesome...just look what I've picked from only twenty plants, and they are just non-stop. They are Tristar, a day neutral variety that just keeps bearing from spring until frost. They aren't huge, but they sure are good.

KitsapFG, I've marked a few for testing, I'll blog about them.

  11. As always WOW. I can't believe you harvested almost 100lbs this week. My tomatoes are starting to come in well this week, but not like yours. I want to know how many plants you have to get that many tomatoes too. I know it isn't all about quantity though. Quality is even more important and I can't wait for your taste test.

  12. Daphne, I'm at the point where I'm begging family and friends to take stuff so I can catch up! I don't want any of it to go to waste, and there is no way we can use it all. Just when I think I can see the end, here comes another 20-30 pounds of stuff! I just sent two big bags of tomatoes, peppers, crookneck squash and cucumbers home with my son. Yesterday I talked my neighbor into taking 10-1/2 pounds of tomatoes to stew plus a small box of heirloom slicers. Nobody can come near me without taking away something from the garden!

  13. Boy your garden is sure producing nicely! So many tomatoes!!!

    Your total is nearing 400!

When is your first frost Granny?

I'm still waiting for a ripe tomato! My garden is coming along, but I must be a month behind you.

Next year I'd like to put in some early tomatoes.

  14. Toni, we get our first frost around October 15th. It's usually just one or two nights, just enough to kill the tender crops, then it turns nice for probably 2-3 weeks. If I could protect the gardens, they'd probably produce almost to Thanksgiving, but we leave for Arizona in October, so I don't even try.
