April 14, 2014 - The Family Garden

Saturday, "Bigfoot Bryan" (the favorite son-in-law), came over and weeded the entire garden.  I had tried to keep it up, but only managed to get it half done, and the weeds were growing fast with the irrigation water now feeding them.  He also got netting installed over the last spinach bed.  I had wanted to be there to take pictures, but I fell asleep and slept through the entire job!  John came over today, so I had him take pictures of the great job Bryan did.

 The spinach is protected.

Strawberries are blooming in their new bed.

And in their second new bed.  John planted Provider and Jade bush beans in those boxes today.  Just a single row of seeds across the front edge of each box, sweet peppers will fill the backs of the boxes.

Garlic is over a foot tall.  Radishes are up.  It's almost time to begin running garden twine over the peas, to give them something to climb on.

They are hard to see right now, but broccoli is in the bed in the center, cabbage in the bed to the right of the broccoli and along the side of the kennel between the radish squares.

Another hard to see, but the two wide row plantings on the right are sweet onions.

My future carrot bed.  We'll get it planted....eventually.

Look!  My Red Norland potatoes are up (fenced bed)!

Copra onions and protected lettuce bed.  Aren't the narcissus pretty?

And that is my our nice, clean, Family Garden!

Yesterday, after the boys got the crabapple tree planted, John went out and planted all the broccoli (6) and cabbages (12).

He was very careful to plant the seedlings 30" apart.

Cutworm collars were added to all.

Another thing I didn't photograph, and nobody in this family would believe it if they didn't see it with their own eyes........while John gardened, son Scott cleaned my kitchen and hand washed the dishes (the dishwasher was full of clean ones), then he damp mopped all the hard surface floors!

Shannon came later, to plant the cabbage and broccoli, but since her brother already had that covered, we just had a nice long visit.

  1. What a wonderful family you have there Granny! Your garden is looking good and way ahead of mine. My son is still here and helping me with the garden. Yesterday we got the plots all cleaned up, the onions planted and the snow peas in! It's nice having some help.....isn't it? That's what families are for!

    1. Robin, you know I'd rather be out there prepping the beds and planting the seeds, but I just don't have enough strength in my legs to get up and down. So I'm lucky my kids are willing to be my knees :-)

    1. Yes it is, Anke.

I wore my new hat to the doctor yesterday. The woman sitting in a wheelchair next to me went crazy over it! She said it was exactly what she wanted, but couldn't find. She asked where I bought it, and I had to tell her it couldn't be purchased, it had to be a gift of love. Then her husband pushed her out the door to their car before I could explain.

    1. Tomato Thymes, it would be terrific if all people were as kind and caring of others as our blogging community is. Could the world stand that much caring? Maybe just a little bit of it at least?

  5. It is so heartwarming to see that your family is stepping in. They are making the effort for you, but are learning as they go along.

    1. Rachel, Mr. Granny says when I'm gone, the fence comes down and grass goes in. I hope the kids change his mind.

  7. Great family! And great garden! Do you know how often you're supposed to "move" strawberry beds? I've heard that you are supposed to, but never heard when. Or is that just an old wives tale?

    1. Carolyn, I usually renewed my beds about every 3 years. That third year I'd prep a spot and begin moving the youngest plants (rooted runners) to their new location. This year they got new beds (planted last summer) because we moved the boxes that had been originally set at an angle and held raspberries and strawberries. I decided I wanted the boxes for bush beans and sweet peppers.

    1. Kelli, the cardboard tube from toilet paper. I save them, cut them in half, cut them open along one side and wrap them around the stems of brassicas, peppers, tomatoes....anything that cutworms might harm.

    1. Really Sue? Do you think 10 hours of sleep last night was enough rest? At that rate, I shall soon be SuperGranny! I do feel better today, but have to go through another scan tomorrow. They wear me out just trying to get me in and out of the car! All of our family's cars are low, and my knees won't lift me from that position. Mr. Granny can't, and I only weigh 118 pounds, but he says it's like trying to lift an elephant!

  12. Love your family! They're awesome. When you give "Bigfoot" a break, can you send him this way for some more weeding? I don't have any growing yet, but I figure by the time you give him a break I probably will have some. Since my husband is the favorite son-in-law, I know how important that must be to you and your daughter. I love that Mr Farmer takes care of my parents!

All willing to give of their time, to help in any way they can and just good people to be arround. A lot like you. I am becomming as fond of the grown members of your family as i am fond of the little ones. Best of wishes to all of you from the right coast.
