April 7, 2014 - Feeling Like Popeye

More spinach.  And more spinach.  And more spinach.

Sunday I pulled out two more big baskets of spinach from the over wintered bed.  Washed and spun dry, it came in at 38.7 ounces.  I sent daughter Shannon home with half of it, and granddaughter Alicia with the other half.  I also took advantage of having the girls here and had them pull all the remaining plants from the bed, 22.2  ounces.  That's all for me!  Total weight of the winter spinach harvest....92.9 ounces (5.8 pounds).  A decent haul, I'd say!

I decided to get about a two week early start on the bush beans that will be planted in that bed.  I'm taking a real chance that we won't get another killing frost, but I have a lot of seeds and can replant if necessary.  I'm goin' for it!

We had a big family dinner at our favorite restaurant on Sunday afternoon.  It was to celebrate Mr. Granny's 79th. birthday, which is tomorrow.

I think about half of them were in the bathroom, LOL!

 Mr. Granny and me.

Just stealing a bite of Mr. Granny's birthday sundae.  It was good!

The baby fight is on!

Back home................

Is it just me, or does it look like I'm giving birth to Amaya out of my left ear?

Sounds good to me!

  1. Not sure my comment sent so trying again.

Either that or you have ears of steel, being able to support her weight with your ear like that. :P

    1. We sure did, Teresa. And the babies were all quite well behaved. Not sure I'd have liked to be in that party they sat next to us though, LOL! I don't know why they didn't seat them in the main room, rather than the banquet room. There weren't that many of them.

  3. Dang Granny you look pretty stylish in your outfit and hat. Usually we see you in your gardening wardrobe.

And that is a nice haul of spinach. I wish mine would start growing. But it seems just stuck right now.

    1. I have two big bags of it in the fridge, Daphne, and I was planning on steaming a big bunch tomorrow. Forgot I will be in surgery, so hope I feel like cooking it up later in the week.

    2. How in the world can you forget about surgery? I'll be thinking of you today. I hope it goes well.

    1. Dynasty would be nice, Mark. But I think they would be rich as well! Hey, I think you live quite close to where my paternal grandfather was born, Ifield (Crawley)! I always wanted to visit England, but the farthest I ever got away from home was Missouri.

  6. You clean up great---love the duds. You're one snazzy lady. But----and I'm just guessing here---are you TAUNTING ME with the spinach story? Cuz that is cruel at this time of year. I haven't seen green anything in months..................

    1. Thank you, 1st.! I dress up about once a year, usually for the April birthday party. Of course there have been a few graduations here and there as well, but one or two "dressy" outfits is about all I can handle. I like my jeans and Ts.

  9. You look great in that last picture of you, with your black hat and matching outfit. The fortune cookie sounds good to me too. I bet that was a fun meal. Good for you sneaking a taste of Mr. Granny's ice cream.

  13. Hi Granny, I just came over from Daphne's blog. My kale and spinach overwintered well in Stafford VA. I'm be harvesting my spinach today as spinach salad is in our future. We are in zone 7. What planting zone are you in?
    Cheers

    1. Hello, Louise! Thanks for visiting.

We are supposed to be 6b, but where I live in town it's a bit warmer, usually at least 5 degrees higher than the surrounding area. I'd say I'm closer to a 7a.

  14. 6 pounds of over wintered spinach is 6 pounds of spinach! That's great. Ours overwintered this year too. We're up to something like 2 pounds. Not sure we'll get as much as you though. And by the way, I think you look kinda cute!

    1. Jody, I'm sharing the spinach with two daughters and a granddaughter, but I still had lots for my salads and a big bowl of steamed spinach. It was exceptionally good for winter spinach.

      Awww...you're kinda cute, too!
