September 14, 2009: Monday Harvest

*Each week Daphne's Dandelions hosts Monday Harvest. Be sure to visit her blog to see who is harvesting what this week!*

This week my harvest totals were down, because I was down......with the flu, or a cold.  Whatever it is, my nose is runny, my throat is sore and my head is exploding, so not a lot of gardening, cooking or canning got done.  I did, however, hit a milestone.  I have now harvested more than 800 pounds from my garden!

9/8 - 10 oz. carrots, 3 pounds 7 oz. bell peppers, 15 oz. jalapeno peppers, 2 pounds 8 oz. tomatoes

9/10 - 12 pounds 5 oz. tomatoes, 1 pound 1 oz. pole beans, 1 pound, 12 oz. cucumbers, 4 oz. bell peppers, 6 oz. strawberries

9/11 - 4 pounds 13 oz. tomatoes

9/12 - 2 pounds 14 ounces tomatoes, 1 pound 7 oz. cucumbers, 2 pounds melon, 3 oz. spinach.  I was worried about the melon getting too ripe, as the others have, so I picked it a bit prematurely.  It wasn't as juicy and sweet as the others.  So far I've only managed to pick one perfectly ripened melon.

Total for the week:  34.5 pounds
Total for the year:  809.5 pounds

9/13 - Canned 4 pints sweet bread and butter pickles, 2 pints tomato juice (and made another 6 cups that were used for soup and beverages), and 4 half-pints pineapple topping (pineapple was not from my garden, of course).

  2. Honestly, Erin. It's silly to just keep canning them, as I'm quite sure we'll never eat all of it in a year's time. I really have to start giving them away, but it's like parting with my children!

  3. You need a little tomato stand in your front yard. Or you could host a tomato party where the guest all have to take home party favors which would of course be tomatoes.

  4. You know, Daphne, I've thought about that tomato stand. Free tomatoes, with a little box for donations. I could probably make enough for next year's seeds. I don't think I could legally sell them in the city, we even have to buy a permit for yard sales here. But I could legally give them away.

  5. Wow that is one incredible harvest total!
I too am coming down with something my kids have passed to me! Oh the joy of preschoolers!
And look at those pretty pumpkins! I actually have one turning orange! Just one, a sugar pumpkin. Hopefully it gets orange before the plant dies from all the squash bugs! I keep having to go tap them off my pumpkin! There are so many!

  6. aww granny, i'm sorry to hear you aren't feeling well! i hope you feel better real soon.

i am amazed 1) that you produced over 800 lbs of fruits and veggies and 2) that you also canned and froze and cooked and baked with most of it. just you and sometimes kevin! wow, i have a hard enough time keeping up with my 4X4 garden and a 15 lb box of produce i get every two weeks!

you need some much needed rest and relaxation. take a few days off, lay around in your jammies, watch chopped and all your shows, read your favorite blogs, and order all your favorite take-out. doctor's orders! =)

  8. Shawn Ann, I had two grandchildren here last weekend, and both were coughing. So guess where I got it. Once they are in school, they bring home everything except their homework!

Yes, Doctor Kelli Ann. I'll do it, just as soon as I go pull some carrots for dinner, pick the strawberries and cucumbers, and get the Swiss steak on ;-)

  12. Momma_S, *cough-cough, hack, snort, spit*, you'd better hurry with that *sniffle, snort, cough-cough* soup. I'm on my last legs.

Yes it is, Judy. But no way am I going to plant this many tomatoes next year! And no pumpkins to add to the weight next year, either.

  13. Up over 800lbs, that is excellent. I wonder if you will make it over a 1000lbs this season? I too am fretting about picking the french melons at the appropriate time. I have one the looks about harvest size, about two hands full but it has no sweet smell yet.

  14. Dan, I'd guess 1000 pounds could be doable, but I only have 30 days left to do it in so not probable. The only heavy crops I'll have coming on now will be the parsnips and tomatoes. I would guess there are over 100 pounds of tomatoes, but doubt that many will ripen in 30 days.

I picked another Savor F1 yesterday. The first leaf had withered, and it was getting soft on the blossom end and weighed 2 pounds...no melon smell, but I have a bad cold so probably couldn't smell it if it did. I cut it open, and it was hard and green inside. I only have three or four more chances to maybe get it right. I still think the aroma is the way to chose, but I don't know why this one was turning spongy.

  15. Sounds like you got the same creeping crud Hubby and Grandson#2 caught...same symptoms...Hope you feel better soon...

  16. SB, I hope so too. I'm just getting worse, not better. I managed to pick about 4 pounds of tomatoes today, then gave up. Only 196 more pounds to go ;-)
