June 1, 2009: Garden Blogger's Death Day

Kate and Crew from Gardening Without Skills has declared this to be....

So, in the name of full disclosure, following are some examples of my gardening imperfection.

You've already met my "sick tomato". It is now a dead tomato.

Well, technically not dead, but I don't think there's a chance it will be bearing any tomatoes!

Most of my carrots are gorgeous. What happened here?

Nobody's going to be eating these beet greens :-(

If I'd known about Death Day, I'd have shown real death. I just pulled out two deceased brassicas. Next time I'll photo the evidence.

  1. I had the same issue for my Death Day post. I mean really, who photographs their dead plants? I do talk about the garden pain on occasion, but usually try not to show the grisly details. I'll have to rethink that. BTW I had a couple of carrots that look like yours. It looked like a caterpillar striped the leaves, but there was not caterpillar to be seen. I'm hoping he met his own death and was eaten by birds.

  2. Dang....I could have shown my sweet potato slips. Oh well....If my maters don't improve, i'll be showing them for sure!

  3. Daphne, I guess I could have shown the absolutely bare spots next to those carrots. There used to be four lettuce seedlings there, but they are nowhere to be seen now.

  4. EG, your tomatoes are going to pull through just fine. Because Granny said so. ;-)

  5. I have some carrots like that. I blaim the resident rabbit family. Wow, I didn't know we were posting garden disasters. I think I have a collection. Good to see I'm not the only one with the multicoloured thumb ;)

  6. Ottawa Gardener, I can't blame this disaster on rabbits, as the only one around here is in a cage. I'm finding earwigs everywhere! I brought in a bunch of beets today, and baby earwigs were falling out of the leaves, all over the kitchen counter. Some of my marigolds look the same, and I know earwigs eat those.

  7. Hi Annie's Granny!!! Thanks so much for participating in GBDD! Although I wish you didn't have any garden death and destruction, so you didn't qualify for the day. Those are some sad pictures for sure - poor little dead things. It is nice to know that someone with suck a knack for gardening sometimes has some bad luck with plants too!

  8. Kate and crew, you are certainly not alone with your garden D&D! I don't care how long one gardens, Mother Nature always has her way with us, one way or another. I just wish she'd quit raining on you....I think you need some raised beds! That would take care of your drainage problems.
